Top End Work - Looking for Speed / Engine Shop in Northeast Puget Sound Area
Need to get work done on my aluminum BlueThunder heads and also fix or replace my camshaft for my 429SJC.
Seeking suggestions for a engine shop hopefully in the north-end of Seattle and/or Everett / Monroe area to do my work, based on good personal experiences or reputation. Thanks in Advance. BC Kevin |

Thank you John I'm giving Brad's Custom Auto a call this morning.

Kevin,
Glad you made it home okay. I had a great time with you guys. Hope to meet up with you soon. Take care, Bruce |
Rhp
Likewise Bruce it was a pleasure. Wish we had more time, but there is always next time and Di and I are looking forward to many more Cobra rides in the future.
Got a few other shop recommendations, thanks everyone. But after talking to Scott today at RHP it was a no-brainer that his speed shop is hands down the place for 429SCJ work in our area. RHP Web site Re in"Car"nation High Performance - Home BTW, I would have never have thought my favorite oil I use religiously, Mobile 1, would rip up the cam lobes when using flat lifters until I talked to Scott. He has some recommended oils to prevent this, or go roller lifters. %/ Thanks BCK |
Leave the Mobil 1 in the vette. Not good for our flat tappet, need that Zink or other ****.
|
I use Brad Penn...lots of zinc. Best overall numbers I have been able to find. Welcome!. Shell Rotella was good but they cut their zinc way down.
|
I second the Brad Penn for anyone with flat tappet cams.

Top End at RHP
Yup, Scotty at RHP said Zinc is the secret, and Brad Penn is the best.
Thanks everyone again for all the advise. Cheers! Kevin |
What solid roller lifters is he recommending? Generally they do not hold up well on the street.
|
Oh No...

That's not good news. RHP is NOT pushing roller lifters on me at all, I'm far more of the instigator. Apparently the hydraulic roller lifters are too tall and create an angle problem for the push rods between the lifter and tappet. My thoughts were once I went to roller lifters, I'd never replace a camshaft and lifters again. But I learn something new everyday. Also if you know of a specific manufacture that has roller lifters that would be better than others for street usage? Thanks Much! Kevin |
Mine has hydraulic lifters and after 20,000+ miles there have been no issues.
The problem with the solid roller lifters is they do not take low RPM's well. It tends to beat the crap out of the roller bearings in the lifter. Some have gone to a bronze bushing instead of the roller bearings, but I have never been able to find anyone that can say with 100% certainty that it cured the problem. This was one of the big issues with the 521 (some say 512 or 514) cubic inch, 600HP crate motor from Ford. Generally the lifters only lasted from 2000 to 6000 miles and then they would spit out the roller bearings in one of the lifters. Hope that helps out a little. Regardless, I would do a lot of research before I went with the solid rollers. |

Thanks again John for the additional details. I will certainly due my due diligence on this aspect prior to shelling out the additional rather substantial bucks for the rollers lifters. Regards, K |
...looks like we've killed two birds with one stone. Been looking for shop with chassis dyno. Looks like a trip to Brads is in future. Sorry to hear bad news about cam. Sounds expensive
