Cobra Funny Car

Check this out........ Entry at the Portland Roadster Show this year. Local car, Shell Valley with a Chevy engine. It did not appear driveable since the radiator was not hooked up, nor did I see anything from the body to the frame such as wires, throttle link, trany linkage, etc. The paint was a color that changed from green to purple depending on the angle and lighting.

M & M,

Nice car but a lot of those type cars aren't driven. I have gone to several big shows in the Bay Area and other places and talked to the people who had their cars hauled inside by a small crane with soft covering on the tires so they never touch the ground or carpet. Four owners told me that their all chrome and billit motors didn't even have pistons in them as they are show cars and not to be started for any reason. They must really enjoy them.

I need your help....

If what you say is true.... let me ask, WHY?
I would like to understand different modes of thought, but this one truly escapes me.....

:3DSMILE:

maybe this explains why they put a chevy engine in it?

What motivation would you have to build it knowing you weren't going to drive it?

I could never understand that either:confused:

I never got to talk to the owner so I am not sure if this will ever be driveable or if it was just built to be a show car. Was thinking the same thing, maybe it might not even have guts in the engine. Cours we all know...... Chevys aint got no guts!

Here is a picture of my Snake at the show....

WOW, I never knew some show cars were SO show they might not even have running motors! I like a good car show, but the "total show" only type of car leaves me baffled as to "why".

Judging

Seems unfair to have a street driven car judged equally against a show only car but that's the way it's done.

J.T.

I have never understood the idea of building a car that you can't drive either but believe me there are a lot of them with mega bucks of money invested in them. I had one guy from the Bay Area down looking under my Cobra at a small show South of here a few years ago and asked him if I could answer any questions. His reply was that he was looking to see if my chrome had changed color so he would know if the car was driven or not. He was sick of going to car shows down there and looking at cars that were never started and didn't even have all the insides in the engines. I saw a Lincoln Continental at one of those shows with the block chromed and more billit than I have ever seen and that car had nothing at all inside the motor. Fantastic paint and interior. Owner told me he had way over $350,000 dollars invested in it to that point. Once in Sacramento they had a show of movie cars and they had to start the cars and drive them from the fair ground entrance into the building. I asked one of the people why they wouldn't let them pull the trailers into the fairground to unload and he told me they wanted to see every car run at least that 1/4 mile from the entrance and back to make sure they didn't put any of the non running cars in the show.

I think that that is a good rule.... sad, but a good one....

This thread is informative. I always assumed that "show" cars were driveable, but just not driven. I never knew that they might just be exterior show and no go. Maybe that explains the question "Is it real?"

Must save some moolah tho.

Empty engine, trans, rear etc etc. No worries about going to billet rods or pistons, upgraded gears in the trans.

No decisions on which anti-freeze to buy, or to use dyno or synthetic oil...

No fun...

you have just solved CA's smog problem.....

come next January.... no car in the state will have pistons:LOL:

I'd bet he'll never spill greasy fries in the seat at the drivein that way.

Your car looked great at the show. There were a few other cobras also. 5 or 6? Hope you and your son had a good time. My Dad and I have for years enjoyed going to this show.
