I might actually get the Cobra on the road this year!!

Well, with all the crap I have gone through over the last couple years because of poor engine work, I finally may actually have hit a break.

Last weekend I purchased a 390 with a streetmaster single plane intake, 570 lift, ported and polished heads, stainless valves, forged pistons, and polished rods. Ok, it's not the 427, but the thing gets up and goes pretty darn good in a big ass 1971 F150 that came with the engine. :)

What's next? Well, I want to keep the truck (ended up costing me $300) so I just need to find that super cheap good running, stock 390 to put back in the truck.

Anyway, assuming the thing doesn't blow up in the first month in the Cobra, I will have had more time driving than in the last two years combined.

Golly, it sure will be nice to actually be able to share in the fun for once in a long while. Not like last 4th of July when I didn't take the cobra out on the track because I was afraid the 427 wouldn't make it on low speed parade laps (that's after spending 10k)....Only lasted a month of street driving after that. What a deal. Anyway, this year I can take my $1500 super duper 390 out and have fun. :) YAY!!!!!!

Hey thats great Brent! Do you think Whitefish Montana with the NWCC might be in your plans for the up coming season? If so it will be a pleasure to meet you!

Jamo 03-18-2003 01:00 AM

Great news Brent! Keeps the running gear in shape.

Tom Wells 03-18-2003 05:08 AM

WOOHOO!

Sounds great Brent!

Does that mean we'll get to meet you at the Fling? :D

Regards,

Tom

I hope that you are up and running. You seem to spend all your time keeping Club Cobra up and running. I do not know how you get enough time to work on your car or to drive it.

Bob Parmenter 03-18-2003 08:33 AM

Here's an alternate plan Brent.
Instead of going through all that work of swapping the engine, just have Larry paint some stripes on the pickemup, call it a Cobra truck, and enjoy! The added bonus is you'd annoy the anti-semite!:3DSMILE:

Super duper 390 is just what the Dr. ordered. It'll put a silly smile on you face to be out cruisin. I built a low compression 460 to drive for a year or two until I could afford a 'built' big block. It turns out that a mild engine is scary enough in a little cobra for me. 17,000 miles so far and still grinnin' !:D
Perry.

So whats up with the 427??? Its not buried in a Nebraska hedgerow is it?

Always,

Zderf

Hey -- don't put down your 390! After all, that's the block that the "turd" started out with -- and it was supposed be fast as all get out...

If it spins the tires is should be good enough until the other engine is ready :)

Have a great time using the back of the pickup as a storage area.

Ron61 03-18-2003 06:50 PM

Brent,

Great news that you found a 390 that is good. That will make that Cobra go. Now put the 427 in the pickup and leave the 390 emblems on it. I will be watching for reports on where you drive soon.

Ron :) :) :3DSMILE:

Fred, I am happy to be a part of your 390 club! :) As fore the 427, well, it's going to be 9k+ to get it healthy again. I just don't have that kind of dough to throw at the engine again.

I have every intension of making it to the fling this year, although it probably won't be in the Cobra.

Ron, the 427 will probably not see the truck, and may not see the cobra until next year or.....

Ron61 03-18-2003 07:09 PM

Brent.

Just hang in there. I once had a 427 tunnel port that was even worse than what you are going through. The first time I fired it up it ran for 10 minutes and the cam timing chanin wheel fell off. What a mess. Second try after extensive work, cam BROKE and ruined most of what was left of the heads. Third try was a charm. I got a 390, built it and sold the tunnel port to a junk yard. After tearing it down even the crank was messed up. You will get yours one of these days. It just takes more patience than I had when I was young.

Ron :) :) :D

Well done Brent. It'll be nice to see your smilin' face up here this summer for the BBQ.

I really think Bob has the right idea about the truck and the stripes in that you live close to Lacey.

Bish:)
