Is that a kit?
I just got back from the Rody Days car show in Florence OR. The weather was exceptable...only got rained on one time on saturday and the turn out was good at 300+ cars. This is the first show I have attended with my SPF and I was surprised with all of the attention. There was a crowd around the car most of the day. The one thing that I got frustrated with is the "Is it real?" question, which I had to answer more than 50 times. I have owned a glass 31 Ford streetrod in the past and took it to many shows. I rarely was asked "Is it real?" I really don't see the difference :confused: . Oh well, I guess I will have to just get used to it because I have no plans to sell the car....It is by far the most fun car I have ever owned :MECOOL: :MECOOL: :MECOOL:

Get used to it. Never does a nice day out with the cobra go by without at least one "Is it real?" or "Is it a kit?". It's almost like they want to discredit you or something... I'm not trying to fool anyone - I'm just an enthusiast who would rather not spend half a million and never drive it. |
I have not had my car for long but this is the one question that 95% of the people ask. The other is...believe it or not, "How much did you pay for it?" This one blows my mind, I guess people feel that it was a frivolous purchase to begin with so it must not be a private thing. I dont know, I would never ask someone what they paid for their car unless the conversation was there already.

I have heard/seen some people ruffled by a person asking how much something costs. I never take it personally, and figure they just want to know if they can afford to get one. I suppose there are a lot of two-faced people out there that might ask the question just so they can make assumptions about the person based on the answer. I dunno, let their therapist figure it out! ;o) Scott

Hyde, I forgot to mention that I took first place in the sand drags in the "Kit Car" class! The only way I could get the paddles to fit under the rear fenders is to put some huge air shocks on. You know the ones with the lights on the bottom. A set of large large "Stay Back" mud flaps were also added to protect the paint on the rear quarters. I also added a large rebal flag which I flew from the roll bar. I forgot my camera so you will have to take my word on it! :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Is it real?
The answer that I have started using I picked up here: "Yes.........but it is not a Shelby!"
I agree on the 'how much' question. They want one, they want to know if they can afford one. I tell them I have seen them from 20 to over 150K invested but 40-60s is a good average. Expecting me to tell them how much I paid is not realistic. You might as well ask how much I make. Now in here, the story is a bit different. Rick |
Here's something to think about:
How would you feel if you owned a "real" cobra and someone asked you: "is that a kit?". I would rather have a car cost a third as much and be mistaken for a car that is 3 times more, than the other way around. Just my $0.005 worth. |
I just say "does it look like a kit?". If they say yes, I just ask "really? What about it brings you to that conclusion?" Of course I am smiling and sincere the whole time, but 90% of the time, they say that it doesn't look like a kit, and the other 10% of the time, most can't tell me why they think that. In the end, I usually tell them, but then I get compliments on the things I have done to make it look period correct, etc. It's a more entertaining exchange than yes or no. :)

Just say "It's a Superformance Cobra". When people ask me I say "Its an ERA". Both of these cars stand on their own without any further discussion... When they ask how much it was, just say "I lost count". It usually stops there. You'll get use to it.. and remember, the most REAL thing about your car is how much fun it is when YOU are driving it. Have Fun. :)

Todd I agree with you. I would not be happy if I spent 1/4 mill and they asked if it was a kit. Your right the glass is half full not half empty.

This past weekend we had a car show here, three Cobras showed up. There was one question that was asked as much as "Is it real"?
"Is it hard to register?" Here in Hawaii it's dang near impossible to register and I was surprised because so many people seem to know that! Ernie |
