1 Week to DVSFII

A week to go 'till DVSFII

Only 3 days of work remain on my yellow beast

THEN, the motor took a crap at idle in my garage.

I have attractive bronze-metallic oil now.

Time to yank the engine!

I waver between being depressed and really pissed off!

-Steve Boardman

Mike - any room in your car?

CobraEd 06-14-2002 10:10 AM

Bronze distributer gear???? Maybe not too big a problem.

If you have a high presure/volume oil pump, time to yank it out of there too as it was the cause of your gear going supernova. You don't really need it unless you are going to race.

It's the distributor gear Steve, it's the gear! Get to Jegs / Summitt and get a steel gear, change the oil and filter. If the gear is still intact on the distributor..you are probably just fine. Come on down!

DV -- It's almost Fling week! Don't forget the cookies!

Gear in tact - Cam not turning! Ouch!

wadesdad 06-14-2002 11:33 AM

I should clarify, gear in tact on the distributor. Cam does not appear to be turning based on the sound during cranking. (The engine seems to turn a little too freely during starting). I cannot see the distributor gear turning either.

Engine builder wants it back in tact to tear it apart piece by piece and properly diagnose it.

CobraEd 06-14-2002 12:08 PM

Something isn't kosher here!!! How can the cam not turn unless you blew the timing chain? You need to look down the distributer hole with a flashlight while someone cranks the engine over so that there is no doubt that it is not turning!

Nothing in the timing chain or sprokets is bronze!!! This is s mystery!

Steve---I'm really sorry about the engine--as we talked today, maybe just maybe--you can get it cranking--It sounded great before. Hopefully, it's just a gear as Ed and Dan said.

My nephew is flying up from Florida and taking my jump seat--
He got all A's and two B's on his grade card--this is his present for doing so well- :JEKYLHYDE

Keep me informed--

Engine dropped off at the builder's today and ironically, my VIN tags are also now in after just a week and a half. I don't expect to make it with my car -this year. I'll keep everyone posted.

Steve,

Let us know what they find.

Steve,

Sorry to hear of your engine troubles....real bummer. Sounds like your engine builder did something very wrong, or a part let go, or a combination of the two. Whatever it is, I hope he backs up his work.

Hope to see you at the fling, regardless.

THE PROBLEM -

Cam kniched on every other lobe where it came into contact with the connecting rods - no, not the bolt head, about 1/2" up the cap.

Bent a few pushrods, broke the timing key, wasted the cam.

THE VERDICT -

No one knows why, but the best guess is that my timing set is improperly indexed. Both the new and old cams hit exactly the same way when set at O degrees.

THE SOLUTION -

When indexed to +2 degrees on the timing set, VOILA! No interference problems.
(My builder doesn't love this solution)

Crane offered to replace everything if I sent it in, however,
Summit exchanged all related parts at no charge and a "good luck!" after they drew a blank as to why it happened

As a show of good faith, I bought the tall K&N filter to better fill my hood scoop and give my revived engine a little breath.

-Input????????????

Now, the $64,000 question is can you have it all back together in 4 days?

wadesdad 06-18-2002 08:11 PM

Engine could have been ready and installed, but decided to take a proven car to DVSFII. I'll be a co-pilot in a friend's car.

I'll use the opportunity to fully charge my personal Cobra batteries, so to speak and come back ready to complete my car after DVSFII.

I look forward to my first DVSF and meeting everyone.
