Driver's School
Guys & Gals:
Got back from driver's school at Carolina Motorsports Park, Kershaw, SC yesterday. Had a great time! Nice track altho somewhat sandy and with the windy conditions we had, car got sand blasted a bit. Learned a lot about the car, running the 2.235 mile track @ speed. (110 MPH in the long straight) Learned how to hit the apexes on the right line. Drove with several instructors to get the benefit of differing points of view. Drove with Brad Davis, a Hendricks family member, who sponsered the school in conjunction with Phil Wicks. Dennis Olthoff, son of the South African champion, the late Bob Olthoff, was also there as an instructor for the Superformance group. All in all, a good experience for this old geezer. I'll probably not do it again, tho, only because my arthritic hands don't work as well as they used to. If anyone wants more info, E-mail me or send your phone # and I'll give you a shout. Frank SPF # 725 P.S. Rick: thanks for the use of your helmet. I'll get it back to you this week. |
Frank, thanks for the update, I understand that there were a bunch of Mini Coopers there too, they said that they gave the Mustang Cobras a run for their Money, I have a MINI S also and have been to Mid Ohio for a couple of BMW driving schools, The MINI does very well on a road course , especially if they have been modded
How was the instruction level at the Wicks school, I heard that they are kinda light on instruction and classes. I am interested in going to a handling/driving school for the new SPF as everyone keeps telling me to be careful with all the power and short wheel base. I 'd like to take some schooling so I can find out all about it in a "safer" environment, Anyone have suggestions for such a school?? Thanks**) |
Next May Apex will be having another driving school at Beaverun PA.
Will post the exact dates when known at www.clubcranky.com FYI...http://www.apexperformancedriving.com/2004%20Events.htm |
Thanks, I just looked at Apex and Club Cranky, seems that I will need to add the 5 point, ( I have an SPF with belts and shoulder belts, ) and not sure if the stock Roll bar is tall enuff( Understand that they put a straight edge from the top of windscreen to top of rollbar and helmet must be below?) also as would be they call for an SA rated snell 95 helmet, I just dropped $200 for a Snell M2000 which is Ok for the BMW driving school. Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your input, I'm just a newbie, and going nuts having a new car and not being able to drive it, Waiting on VIN plate from the State of Ohio, which should be here this week. Then , find a few sunny days before old man winter bites us all in the butt**) |
