Batteries behind passenger seat
I believe the original aero batteries used on original csx cars are now unavailable.
can anyone tell me of a modern equivalent that looks close to this? im toying with the idea of NOT having a standard 12V unit in the boot (should that be trunk?) thanks, kevin |
I was thinking there was an aircraft battery that fit the same spot. Do a search here and I'll bet you find some info.

I have two 6v Optima batteries connected together in the tray behind the passenger seat. They work great, although they are a bit smaller than the original battery tray.

The last tray I made we used wheelchair batteries. The tray measures 5.25 x 19.75" in my reference one and I make them out of some rugged angle iron that will keep those lumps of lead in place better than sheet metal. You can slice end handles off, put fake or real top ropes on, paint them and stick soda bottle caps on top. Sal sells Rebat labels and even replica batteries which look pretty good. I have a repro Autolite with fill caps (through which you can see the sealed top of the real battery) and everything. I believe it's correct for the street cars; I wasn't aware that something unusual was in the racers.

2 of these Oddyssey batteries behind the passenger seat wil be as close as you will be able to get.

thanks all, i'm looking into the leads you've provided and seeing what can be sourced in the uk.
next question - can anyone tell me how these are secured? i dont see a top securing strap/bar in any of the pics i can find? thanks again, kevin |
There's a picture on my site under Cobra parts. I use a threaded rod each end with diagonal threaded rods across the ends. Strong and simple.

I am on my second set of Gill aircraft batteries in 4 years. Not crazy about them and will probably mount one battery in the trunk when they expire. They aint cheap either. It is critical that these batteries are kept at a charge level of +12.3 volts. Once they drop below that level these batteries are very susceptible to sulfiding resulting in very limited amp storage capability. They can sometimes be partially brought back with a heavy dose of high amp charging to "burn" off the sulfur layer but the the batteries never regain their full storage capability.
Nothing beats an Optima with 2/0 cable. |
