Original Prop Rod

I am looking for a close to original as possible hood prop rod for my BDR Cobra. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Michael

A piece of 3/8 OD tube squished flat at one end and through bolted to a tab on the frame with a bend about 3 inches away to clear the body. A rubber cap over the other end, small clip to hang that end in, done deal.

I made mine just like mickmate describes. Put the end of the tube in a vise and flattened it, drilled a hole thru it, took a tubing bender and made the bend until it looked right and then put a vacuum plug cap on the end. Looks like it came with the car originally.

Check with Mickmate first, maybe he can make you one...if not, I know Cobra Restorers has them (at least they did 3-6 months ago).

I have them if you need one.

The picture on cobra restorers isn't that good. I went to Mick's site and didn't see a picture there either. I guess I am confused about the flattening of the tube and the 90 deg bend. Does someone have a picture of this??

mickmate 04-02-2010 09:18 PM

It's more like a 40 deg bend. The CR pics just show the ends, a cap on the hood end a bend and flat on the hinge end. Pics are coming, yeah I know and so's Christmas right.

There is a small clip that the rod slips into to. I'll try and get a picture a little later.

It has a 1/4" screw that holds it to the tab coming off the birdcage. The tabs are the same as the hood and trunk hinge brackets.

Nick will be making mine provided I get that far..............Top notch parts at reasonable prices...

That clip that holds the rod is not what the 289's had (not sure about 427's). It should be a vertical mount "J" shape. I might find a picture.

mickmate 04-14-2010 05:32 PM

Hey Jeff that is yours get back to working on it. The 289's have the rod hinged off the hood latch according to the ones noted. It also has a second bend with one half way along to keep the hood end parallel with the inner fender.

289ACE 04-14-2010 10:10 PM

Once again I learned some things. I wasn't positive the clip was the same as used on the 289s, but the second bend in the rod is something I have never heard before. It sounds like a good idea and I may have to remake mine to add that.
