Correct fuel log for a 1x4 set-up

Were all of the correct fuel logs for a 1x4 set-up on an FE in anodized gold? I thought I recalled seeing some in silver too.

Also, I am considering moving to the original style hard fuel lines and canister style filter between the pump and log. I read a few posts suggesting that leaking was an issue. Was that for the canister or the flared fittings on the lines or both? How prone were these to leaking?

EDIT: I called Dearborn to ask about the fuel logs and canister and was told they only have the logs for a 2x4 set-up not 1x4. They didn't have the canister/filter set up either. They referred me to someone else that seemed to know what he was talking about and he said the 1x4 cars never had fuel logs or a canister set up. They just had a hard line connecting the two bowls and then going down to the pump. The fuel filter screwed to the bottom of the carter fuel pump.

What's the correct set-up and does anyone have a pic of it?

I believe all 427s came with a fuel filter cannister from Ford. The Galaxies and Fairlanes had a hard line to the nearest corner of the carb and no log for the 1-4v setups. Maybe that's what your guy was referring to.

Cobras with turkey pans use a log with a hard line from the filter cannister. I bought mine from Motorsports International in California. I'm not sure they're still around. It's gold cad plated, but I'm not sure what is correct, gold or silver.

The log I used on my setup is different than the 2-4v or 3-2v setups in that it sits further back on the intake than either of the others. This requires a different hard line. I could not find one, and had to fabricate one. It's basically the same line as used with the multi-carb setups except it has an extra 45 degree turn at the log end and it is a couple of inches longer to reach the log that's further back. I used a repro multi-carb line as a template and bent up a duplicate that has the extra length and the extra bend. Pretty simple to fabricate.

I have not experienced any leaks yet. I have a repro chrome filter housing, and some of these were indeed leakers. They're getting pretty hard to find in NOS or used, and go for big bucks. If you can find one, buy it.

I can snap a pic of my setup tonight and post if needed. I think it looks stock. That was my goal. Whether it is or not is open to debate.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that! Also, what hose did you use from the log to the carb and what hose clamps? Just standard hose and clamps or is there a special type of hose and clamp that was used on the originals?

I used std. black rubber fuel hose and stainless steel screw-type hose clamps. Not sure what was original. Someone here may have pics of the original setup.

Hi Doug,
This is what the complete set looks like.
I bought my fuel log from Southern Automotive, and it is gold cad plated.

Sorry for the pic quality.
Mike.

I just spoke to Tim Mason at Dearborn Steel Tubing (248) 478-264 and he has it all. Most of it is even NOS (canister is not, although very similar, but is also not supposed to leak like the NOS ones, and the hard fuel lines are repros, but by the original manufacturer, which I think was actually Dearborn). He actually has a small treasure trove of all sorts of NOS stuff. His father bought up a ton of Ford's inventory years ago.

Anyway, great guy. Call him if you are interested.

I've been dealing with Tim also. Good guy, good service, good follow up and he has the right stuff as Doug says. Comp cars used a LeMans carb and that doesn't need a fuel log as there is a hard line between float bowls. I believe the hard line from the filter went up to the front float bowl. The line from the pump to the filter is also modified to fit the tee in Cobra applications as they have the mechanical pump and the tee for electric pump feed for reserve to make it back to the pits.

Short threadjack - Thanks for the convertible TP Mickmate, looks great! Much better solution that drilling holes in the TP.

So is the hard line I am getting from Dearborn going to work with the T-fitting (Tim is also sending me the fittings) at the pump or do I need something else? It hasn't arrived yet, so I am not sure which fittings I am getting yet.

Sal's (login CSX4241) old car CSX 4241 (funny how that works) has a very accurately detailed engine compartment. I seem to remember he said he had an original 1x4 fuel log and canister. He had a filter under the car before the fuel pump and had a hardline running through the canister. Basically it was just for show. You could look up some photos here on cc or on csxinfo. He posted a bunch of them.

CSX 4241 was a labor of love if there ever was one.

By the way Pat, you can see one of the brass fittings where the fuel line connects to the log....the other is at the connection to the pump (I believe).

Yes, I think between brass, red, blue, and silver, I like silver the best.

mickmate 04-02-2010 08:25 PM

That's a good shot of Sals, I'll have to look up a few more. So you see he has a LeMans carb with the tube between float bowls but it's on the opposite side to the fuel feed lines from the log. That brass fitting is the 45 that goes from the flare end to the NPT. The line you'll get will either need twisting to match the tee or the first bend cutting off and I used a tube nut and sleeve to go straight onto the tee. I'll get some pics without the expansion tank in the way.

You know, I never thought I'd say this about a fuel canister, but Dearborn Steel Tubing's repro canister is a thing of beauty.:)
