427 Emblems on Chrome Pent-roofs - Where?

Hey guys,

I'm building a 427 s/C with an FE with chrome pent-roof valve covers. I'm trying to determine the correct location for the "427" emblems on the covers and not having much luck - or maybe too much. Do both emblems go to the front, to the rear, or are they staggered?

I checked some old photos of the original cars (1967 and 1977 photos) and found them both to the front ('77) and both to the rear ('67). I've also seen them staggered, but probably just on replicas. Does anyone know if there was a correct arrangement? I've also seen several original photos with no emblems! Who knows for sure?

Thanks,

Both to front is correct from my understanding...

This has come up before. I don't believe they had these emblems. At least not all of them. I could be wrong. Anyone have definitive proof?

ERA 778 - your looking good from pictures in your photo gallery. Looks like your several months ahead of me. Keith built my motor also but I haven't picked it up yet. I'm going with emblems on the front of the valve covers for what it's worth.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the kind words! I think Keith did a great job, but of course, I won't know for sure until I get it on the road! I hope to drop the engine in by the end of the month. I've got a guy blueprinting a new Richmond Gear 5 speed and he should have it done next week.

Everyone:

I also found lots of photos with no "427" emblems on the v-covers, so DougD could be correct. I think I'll go with them on the front-they should be more noticeable there!

There are plenty of photos of road tests from 1966, the emblems go on the front.

I have seen and photographed CSX 3021 (the gold 3800-mile Bill Turner, 1-owner car) and both are on the front. I have also seen and photographed CSX 3050 (the Gulf orange 10k mile car belonging to Jack McIntyre) and both are on the back. One or the other could have been turned around in their lives, but I'd almost bet 3021 is "as-delivered" from Shelby.

I can guarantee that Bill never changed them, , when I owned CSX 3183, the original owner was very , very anal, emblems on the front.

ERA 778 - this link was posted on the All Cobra Thread and few have seemed to notice it. It takes some time to go through but it has a treasure trove of photos of original (and restored) originals. Maybe some useful info in it.

Great - then serve 'em up! We'd like to see photos of original, unrestored cars only.

Like everything else at Shelby American, there are no certainties. These cars came with 427 center oilers, 428s, and 427 side oilers. The engines were assembled at Ford, then shipped to Shelby for install. The Galaxies and Fairlanes did not have them, so they did not receive the emblems at Ford. So did Shelby American put them on, or owners, or ?

There may be pics out there with the emblems, but there sure are pics without as well. I'm not convinced either way.

emblems

Not all the pent roof valve covered 427's in Cobras came with the emblems (most race cars didn't) and I recall having some discussions with other owners that there may have been some variation in where the emblems were installed on the valve covers. However, the majority seem to have been installed at the front on both sides (my car came that way). CSX3050's valve covers look to have been reversed at some point, because the SC covers had an extra large chamfer on one end that went to the back of the engine (to clear the power brake booster for those engines intended to go in Fairlaines) and those chamfers on 3050 are now toward the front.

I heard the same thing that Mike had said. So I second that!
Go no emblems as it begs the question: "Is that a real 427?"
