Remote oil filter - originality 'compliant'?

What's the thinking on originality for remote oil filters on 289 cars? Did any of the race cars have this feature?
I'm 'over' horizontally fitted filters, fitted low down where accessibility isn't good, that piddle hot oil and make a mess when removing.
Thoughts of the desirablility of a remote filter emerged again while changing the oil and filter on my ol' girl (Alfa) and as usual, hot oil everywhere no matter how quickly I try to spin off that filter.
So....is it kosher, what sort should I be looking at and where should it be mounted?
Cheers,
Glen

Great question Glenn! I, too, would like to hear what the historians have to say about this. Gentlemen... ?

I have never seen a remote fitted to an original 289 comp car.Remember not too many had oil coolers and those that I`ve seen were routed from cooler to sandwich block.
I mounted mine on the right hand bottom corner of the front shock tower to keep it period looking but at the same time preventing oil mess whilst changing filters.

Here is what I did using a Canton remote oil filter adapter.

All that I am aware of was the machined aluminum "sandwich style" adapter. GT40 MKIs and the first GT350 R Models all used something similar. Like most SAI race parts all of them might have been a little different depending on who machined them. I have seen a few 1963-64 SAI race shop drawings for race parts and most are not much more than outlines, i.e. fine details were not given.

Long ago I bought a NOS second generation GT350 R cast aluminum adapter that points the filter down. Wouldn't fit in the space available in CSX2310 so I sold it.

Thanks Ross. Any chance of a picture?

Glen

Thanks Dan. That sounds about what I expected, and certainly if it looks period correct, who can argue?

Glen

Thanks for the pic Snakebit.
What sort of adaptor goes onto the original filter mount? I've looked at a number of websites, and most only show the filter mount and not the adaptor at the other end.

Glen

Canton makes the filter adapter that mounts to the block and the billet remote filter adapter. Transdapt also has a similar set up. With my ERA, there was only room for a short filter between the block and the frame. I made the aluminum mounting bracket out of 5/16" aluminum plate. Just make shure it sits high enough for the filter to clear the fuel pump.

For nearly ten years (early 1980s to early 1990s) I use to take CSX2310 and run the open track events at Hallet during the Mid America event. For that play I wanted some type oil cooler. I settled for a Hayden brand adapter and heat exchanger radiator. The cast aluminum adapter as installed looks similar to a SAI one and the radiator I chose was like Daytona Coupes used for the 1965 season. I really like the adapter because it has a bi-metal thermostatic control spring in it. The circuit through the radiator is not full flow until the oil gets to around 160°F. Makes warm up quicker and I don't have to disconnect or block the cooler during cold weather like I did on my Boss Mustangs in the 1970s.

Dan - do you know if the Hayden filter adaptors are still available? I found the Hayden oil coolers, but not the adaptors.

Glen

Glen,
I have seen them in ebayŽ listings by Hayden™ dealers. There are several models available depending on your application. I would think that any large RV dealer's parts department would be a source. Hayden was a (might still be) an O.E. supplier. Shelby American used their equipment and for a while in the late 1960s sold kits out of their catalog. Ford sold kits for a long time too through their racing parts business.

Dan

PS Just did a quick search "hayden adapter" on ebay and ones offered by Summit Racing came up first.

Found it thanks Dan. I should look on eBay first....
Cheers,
Glen
