289 taillights
A couple of photos used for reference have confused me. Could someone please confirm for me the relationship of the tallights on a street (leafspring) 289 to the trunk space?
The internal trunk sheet metal on my car is riveted to the square and tubular framework running down the trunk sides internally. This means the back of the taillight is in the wheelarch, and will need protecting from the spray thrown up by the rear wheel. That's fine, but one pic I've seen on the CSXinfo gallery pages looks like the panelling turns away from the trunk towards the back of the car, thereby bringing the back of the taillights into the trunk and therefore protected from the elements. They were inside protected by the fiberglass trunk /spare wheel floor.

Borrowed this pic of Jeffs car. Not sure if it helps or not but you can kind of see how the trunk pan goes over to the fender/frame.

Thanks, that's a useful picture for many reasons! Unfortunately it doesn't have the internal panelling in place, so the rear light protection is not evident. I think I've found one on the CSXinfo site that helps, if this is not a modified car:
csxinfo.net - Photo Gallery The side wall of the trunk angles away from the framework tubing, with a pop-riveted panel, so the back of the light is inside the trunk. As Kirkham make it, the aluminium panel continues straight, against the tubing, leaving the light out in the wheelarch. You can imagine what would happen to that bulb when the stone chips start flying! Time for a bit of surgery... |
Yes, the picture is correct as there is a bend before the light.
The light should be in the trunk protected............ |
Actually there was a small aluminum panel that is riveted to the inner panel that protects the taillight assembly.
