Did you ask Jack if he ever competed in a 427 Comp? :p

FatBoy 04-16-2013 11:39 AM

I didn't need to because I know that he didn't. However, is it likely that the 427 configuration would be significantly different to a 289 FIA or Daytona, or any other race 289 for that matter?

looks good Paul, but a 289 would certainly need to drink more juice, and if there was no mechanical pump fitted, why have a flick switch for the elec pumps on the dash?

Should that be 427?...
In Britain at least, racing cars of the period usually had dashboard switches for the fuel pumps. Racing Austin Healeys used twin electric fuel pumps with no mechanical, usually with a toggle switch for each on the dash and the pumps plumbed in parallel, running one at a time. Thus if one failed the other could be flicked on without interrupting forward motion!

FatBoy 04-17-2013 10:56 PM

I assumed that's what he meant Roger. :)

What you has described is also in line with the SW installation guide. It is intriguing that something so relatively recent seems to be lost in the fog of time.

There are clearly Cobra fuel tanks with a reserve capacity, but how original these are with regard to the race cars isn't yet clear to me.

er, yes, brain lagging behind fingers.
i still dont see why you would add a toggle switch for elect pumps if there was no mechanical one. or was it deemed some sort of safety feature?

As Roger has stated, the pumps were installed (on the Healeys) in pairs with one as a backup for the other, so the switch allowed the driver to swap pumps if the first one failed.

The SW 240A pumps are rated at 60gph, which should be ample for a big block at WOT, I would have thought, although a Holley Red Top delivers 71gph at 4psi.

Electric pump failure was pretty common in the sixties!

Bernica 04-18-2013 07:45 AM

I would think that Bob Bondurant would have the definitive answer....

FatBoy 04-18-2013 08:36 AM

Anyone have his contact details? :)

Bernica 04-18-2013 01:14 PM

Try here....

Dan Gurney would also be a source. I believe he drove for CS as well. Both are still around as far as I know....

FatBoy 04-18-2013 02:02 PM

I've just sent an email to Bob and Dan was at Goodwood last September for the Revival, so I'll see if I can track him down somewhere as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Good luck. Post what you learn. I am still with Mickmate on this, but will be curious what you learn.....

I'm also on Nick Acton's side of the fence.

FWIW, the folks at Hi-Tech Motorsports back in the day (early 1994 for my car) were finicky as relates to originality. And...they maintained a relationship with Mike McCluskey, and shared build info with each other.

My car came with two SW electric fuel pumps, two toggle switches for use on the dash, and a fuel tank plumbed with two pick-ups. Those pick-ups were arranged exactly as Nick described; providing a primary and reserve configuration. I have dismantled that original Hi-Tech Motorsports tank and saw the internal construction.

David,

How are your pumps configured? Does each SW pump draw fuel from a different pickup or do they both use the same one?

I'm sitting very much on the fence at the moment, but I'm equally happy to fall one side or the other. :3DSMILE:

Only one toggle switch that fires both electrics at the same time, at lease in my case and most I know of.

I trust Nick and McCluskey. In Shelby's own words about McCluskey: "To the Man that knows more about Cobras than I do".

Nick is the same, and passionate about "properly sorted" cars.

Interesting, because that is different to the pictures I have seen of "original" cars where only a single feed from the tank goes to both pumps.

Thanks,
Paul
