Finish on original white footboxes
Hard to tell from the pictures I have seen what the gel coat finish was on the white foot boxes, gloss, semi gloss, flat?

I don't know what the original gel color was but will give you a tip.
Gloss Wimbledon White looks good and will make inevitable exhaust soot, oil sweat and other stains much easier to clean. |
Going to spray the final visable areas with white gelcoat for durability, was just curious about the final finish.

Smooth and more or less shiny but not smooth like a spray on paint job. The surface was as molded during the hand lay ups. The exterior of the parts were molded against the inside walls of the molds. All kinds of defects were common in the gel coat, entrained air bubbles being the most common especially near corners. Bubbles could be pin hole size up. I have seen marks left by what looks like places in the molds that were taped up for some reason.

Thanks for the help. Mods are all done on the foot boxes, now to get the gelcoat on....

Had the local auto paint shop mix up a couple of cans of Wimbleton White and sprayed the top of my fiberglass footwells with that. In retrospect, should have shot some clear over that, but oh well.

Mine have the appearance of gloss gel coat in a basic white.
I need to repair a couple small areas where the gel coat has chipped during construction and is showing the glass mat below the surface. I'm thinking I'll mix up some West Systems epoxy with the white coloring powder in it to fill in the chips and sand it down to smooth once it dries. Anyone else have a better way to repair these chips? Bob |
I use white gel-coat repair, comes in 2 tubes, mix equal lengths and use as a filler. It gives a perfect repair, it's the same stuff!
In the UK it's made by Plastic Padding, must be an equivalent available over there. Plastic Padding Gelcoat Filler 165g | sailboats.co.uk Try a boatyard. Painting on top gives a different effect as the gelcoat is coloured right through. |
I doubt whether the original footboxes were done in anything other than basic white. They just yellow a bit after many years after heat exposure.
