Windshield Escutcheons

I have never never been really happy with the market available windshield escutcheons.

For one thing, the slot for the frame had rounded ends (the frame has square edges) and to lay the frame back enough to be right for the convertible top and side windows, the escutcheons wouldn't lay flat.

Solution: square the ends of the slot and slightly lengthen the slot in the escutcheon.

Then. I always felt the aluminum escutcheon never looked right against the chrome windshield frame, so I thought I would polish the escutcheons.

Then I found out the escutcheons have some sort of clear finish on them that is hard to polish off.

So maybe I'll get a fresh set and send them out to be chromed. Will that clear finish on them cause a problem for the plater?

Any input or other ideas?

Cheers
Greg

It's probably anodizing which can be stripped off with oven cleaner or a product Eastwood sells. However, I'm not sure aluminum can be chrome plated - I think the process revolves around the properties of ferrous metal - not 100% sure. But yes, the anodizing finish would have to come off. Probably easier to carefully polish and clear coat.

What we need is some made of stainless steel. The could be polished w/o the cost of plating.

Aluminum can be chrome plated. Would be easier to use some chemistry to remove the film and then polish it.

Aluminum can be copper plated then chromed but is the expense worth it. Strip the clear and boil them in tomato juice to make them look original ;-)

The original AC Cars parts were die stamped and shape formed aluminum. The large main appearance sides were mirror polished and all surfaces hard clear anodized.

I have seen originals that somebody chrome plated during a restoration with little or no preparation that subsequently had badly peeling chromimum with still shiny anodize beneath it.

I like LMH's idea of SS.

I'm going to contact both my plater and my SS guy for input.

I'll let you all know.

Greg, if you do happen to have a set of them made out of stainless, let me know. If they aren't too much, I'd like to get a set.
