I'm planning to use a Tiger gearlever on my car's toploader. Could anyone tell me how long the original street 289 leafspring car gear lever should be? The Tiger one is straight, with 'square' reverse lockout lever, and measures 8.25" from the base of the bolt mounting to the tip of the thread at the top. The actual shaft is 5.25" from where it is welded to the base mounting to the top of the lockout slider. How does this compare?
Also, there doesn't seem to be room for the rubber bush vibration insulators around the two mounting bolts for the shifter to the 'U' piece on the mechanism, which 4spd Mustangs had - did the Tiger/Cobra not have these?

Roger, Tigers, 289 Cobras, and early toploaders, T-10's did not have shifters that were rubber bushed at the mount. The bushes did not show up till around mid 65 I believe. If you need a photo of the short shifter that was also used on the first group of Tigers, email me. AJ

Thanks AJ, that's what I thought, nice to have it confirmed. I have the Tiger parts ready to fit. I had considered changing the length of the Tiger shift lever if the Cobra is shorter, but frankly it can't be much shorter without looking silly so I'll probably leave it!

Yep, the early levers didn't have rubber grommets where they attached to the yoke in the shifter assembly.

I don't know much about Tigers but I am told Tigers used two different length levers during their production span and that the first is exactly the same length as a Cobras.

I do not know if Tigers ever used the thin curved (fragile) finger grips. Cobras did until about CSX22something and those Cobras also used the early large knob.

From what you say, Dan, I would guess a rack and pinion car would perhaps be more likely to have the 'squared' finger lift, and presumably the more commonly-available knob with the metal lower segment?

In my opinion, getting the shifter length right is a biggie. I've seen replicas with the shifter so long it looked like a sailboat mast! Personally, I like the looks of the short shifter in later MKII's but so long as it's 'correct', it's all good to me.

Dumb question maybe but can you guys tell me if if slotted or Philips screws are correct for the chrome boot trim ring?
I've seen some supposedly unrestored cars that have Philips screws but have also read that slotted screws were used throughout the car.

Those measurements are consistent with mine. I have photos of CSX2459, and interestingly, it has the older style shift knob on it, like Jeff's. I have originals of both styles, but I am leaning toward the early one as in the photos...

Seems like I recall that Dan said that those screws are Phillips-head...

Phillips and they are a Ford part.

AC Cars used slotted (various head shapes) fasteners. Ford supplied the rings and Phillips screws for the shift lever boot retention.

SA apparently used some Phillips and some slotted head screws in the COBRA radio kit installation in my black car.
