steering rack
does anybody know what original cars used for rack was it mg

On the 289's with rack and pinion, it is very similar to the MGB rack. I'm not sure if the 427 was the same or not.

289 was an MGB rack with a modification to the pinion. In stock from Gerry Hawkridge. I suspect the same for a 427, but Gerry will be able to tell you.

It was the same on all rack and pinion cars. It is a Cam Gears brand rack that is effectively the same as an MGB rack with a shortened input or pinion shaft. I have rebuilt originals where original parts are important but the new replacements are the way to go from Flaming River for most applications.

The website also specifies that the pinion has been shortened for "better clearance than original". If the pinion is shorter, than the intermediate shaft would also have to change, unless someone found having the steering wheel moved toward the dash is better for them. Sounds like playing with fire, as clearances like intermediate shaft to header tubes is often close to begin with. |

That is an exact replacement Cobra rack. If you want it to read Cam Gears down under the car where no one sees it you know what to do. We're talking 50 year old technology here. The MGB and Cobra are 50 years old. I believe the FR is smoother than the Cam Gears after comparing them side by side. You would expect it to be. Cam Gears is a smidgeon under the 3 turns lock to lock at about 2.9. The input shaft has been shortened for better clearance in the MG application. The Cobra rack has a 7.5" pinion shaft in both.

There is a slow as well as a fast MG rack. The original Cobra used the fast rack. The Flaming River Rack is right in the middle speed wise.

does anyone know if overall length of the pinion shaft in cobra rack is 7.5 or is that what the measurement is outside of rack?

I need to know to. I have a cam gears that I need to shorten the shaft and respline.

David Kirkham was nice enough to send me a picture of an original, I cant get it to load but with the pinion shaft in you should have 4.75 out of the housing.
