427 street car door hinge covers

Were the original door hinge covers just molded black plastic or were they covered in vinyl or leather?

CSX3183 08-08-2013 05:18 PM

Covers

Black plastic type material, no covering

Thanks

428Street observed that he thought the dash support tubes down to the trans tunnel were vinyl or leather wrapped on the street roadsters. Can that be confirmed?

mickmate 08-08-2013 08:44 PM

The door hinge covers are fiberglass with a texture of vinyl.
Tunnel tubes are vinyl wrapped.

CSX3183 08-08-2013 09:11 PM

Correct

Now that I see your answer, my Chemo affected brain cells concur, fiberglass with a vinyl grain molded on them, and yes the supports are covered in vinyl.

Man it's a ***** sometimes, the 'ol brain just short circuits.

I should have originally said vinyl grain texture.

Thanks guys.

Dan street cars had two screws and trim washers into a backing block. That block also held the door strap behind it and the door pocket. SC cars had one screw top center into the J plate of the door hinge if they had one.

Where can I purchase some of the door hinge covers? Didn't see them listed at Finishline.

Thanks for any advice given.

One of the projects I never finished on mine was to bend up some sheet metal covers and cover them with vinyl. I made cardboard patterns but never did the sheet metal versions. Pretty simple really.

Karl,
I bought some from Cobra Restorers and later Acton. I'll go on a limb and say Acton's are better. I say 'go on a limb' because they could possibly be sourced from the same place. The ones from CR shrank a little off the mold, so when I put them on, they cracked! Acton's were great. I just put small dabs of silicone caulking in the corners (to mount) and done.

Thanks Rodneym, I'll give a look.

I've got them on my two cars and I like them. I used a block of wood mounted to the hinge and the two screws to mount the cover. It gives the cars a more finished out look.

They're almost luxury cars now.

99% sure everything from Acton is made by hand. I highly recommend working with Nick. He is super knowledgeable and is an absolute craftsmen when it comes to replacement parts for replica's to originals. And no, I have no vested interest in Acton other then I think he is a great guy and a super Cobra enthusiast.

Thanks guys. I just sent a set off for another original car today. They are really more for street cars or the road going comps (SC) but if you have driven with exposed hinge plate edges to rest your knee against or worse bumped off them you'll see good sense in having these for practicality as well as a more finished look.
