MK II air Cleaner?

Hey all,
I see a couple different air cleaners on original 289's and wonder which is correct.

One is like this Mustang K-Code unit. I call it a "double-hump":

The tops are different but I've seen both on 289 Cobra's. Which one is correct as per original? What base should it have?

As I understand it, the double hump should be correct. The base I could not say.

You are correct, the "Double Hump" was originally sourced from Fairlane 289 Hipo application (as was the engine) in chrome and painted. Also carried over to some FE's in painted form. Rare Bird. The Flat Top one as far as I know was a Mustang piece, used in absence of the other.
It was part of an engine dress up pkg. Chrome Valve covers & Air Filter assy.

The double hump top shown in the first photo is a replica of the original hipo air cleaner lid. The contours are not very close to the originals, unfortunately, so I can tell at a glance. The Falcon Sprint option came with the same air cleaner as did some T-Birds of the era, as well as a few police cars, although those lids were not chromed. I have purchased examples of all of these over the years. The dress up kit available from Ford at the time also had this lid, so it could be found on many different cars.

I would expect a 1963-64 Fairlane assembly for HP289s. Ford called them the "tuned assemblies" when new. People call them 'double hump lid style' today. Base wise what that means to me is a base with the filtered air hose nipple with a rubber cap to close it off since Cobras didn't use filtered air for the choke hot air pull off circuit. Bases were spray painted black on the surface that faces the intake manifold. The only paint anywhere else was over-spray. Sometimes only a faint mist of tiny black droplets found a way to the element side and sometimes a lot of heavy over-spray reached the element side.

If you find an unrestored base painted black over gold I believe that to be an early base originally painted gold for production that didn't get used, that was subsequently resprayed black and put into the service parts channel. Most of the ones I have come across were just dress up parts not associated as coming off a factory installation. Ford advertised the dress up kits widely.

Hi Guys The pictures posted below I believe are of an original air cleaner . I have owned this air cleaner since the early 70's. I am not seeing the difference in the profile. At one time I was running it on a 65 comet convertible . At the time I was playing with the carb a lot and did not put the wing nut on ............so on hard braking and cornering the lid came off and was run through the fan on several occasions. My lid looks wavy like the one in the first post but its from running it through the fan.
