427 Cobra street exhaust manifolds

I know this subject has been covered before, but I've exhausted the word combinations trying to search the old posts.

I know the original 427 Cobra Street cast iron exhaust manifolds are rare/impossible to find.

Were there any production Ford passenger car/industrial engine exhaust manifolds that were close?

Cheers
Greg

There are a few truck manifolds that will work.

I wonder if something like this would work:

Centered outlet (might clear the footboxes), straight down outlet for under car exhaust.

Not great for horsepower I know.

Something like this looks more like the original 427Cobra Street log style exhaust manifolds:

This is a LH, which swapped to the RH side would clear the pass footbox better.

Now if only I could find a RH to swap to the LH side.

Long ago someone posted pics of the original manifolds. Anyone have them?

The first one you show is good for centered outlet but not the log look.
The second one has the log look you're after but direction/angle on the exit.

This is one thing that I waver back and forth on. My desire to replicate an original vs a more efficient exhaust system. Choices!

Thanks guys. And by coincidence, when I logged on this morning, Kirkham's pics of the street manifolds were in the photo banner at the top of the page. Got them copied now.

That is easy to answer, PUT A BETTER EXHAUST ON!
I saw an early original narrow hip car that Phil Remington was driving for radiator heat testing that had a Tri-Y tube header system on a visit to the airport facility in 1965. I don't know how many cars got this but it was a much better under car exhaust system than the cast log header.

Restorers of originals will tell you the cast are good for 100HP loss.
Not this set up though.

What were the test results for loss with this system?

That is a great looking system Nic, it looks a lot like the one Remington had on that street car he was testing so long ago. The stock cast exhaust will also limit your cam choice because it can not tolerate much overlap.

Roger sent me this message:

1. 8 FE flanges
2. 2 pieces of rectangular steel, 1/8" wall. (2??x3??)
3. piece 3" square to hand fab the downspout
4. 2 3-bolt exhaust flanges.

Install engine, steering, pedal box with masters.
locate to fit and tack the pieces.
Take it somewhere to be welded, ceramic coat satin black.

DONE

As I recall this is about what was done prior to the manifolds being cast,
basically of a "log" manifold with center drop at some odd angle to fit.

There is very little room for the downspout, its a small target, so anything
other than the correct "real" piece is going to need ALOT of rework.
Cast iron isn't easy to cut nor weld.

When you're finished, the headers are down under anyhow, just say
"Bought the last set of OEM Cobra street headers in 1970"... Likely
even experts couldn't tell!!! Likely flow much better than the real one."

Nice little project for the new year.

Cheers
Greg
