Third hood latch, what's the story?

To keep the bonnet down at high speeds.
The hood scoop was pulling them up, then?

Too much pressure inside the engine bay, no side vents on early cars to let the air out and the additional scoop which forces additional air income I think. Mine will get a safety bonet latch too :-)
Forgot about the side vents... Don't think I'll be adding one... Interesting to find a small detail after so many years.
No side vents, so better the additional latch :-)

Another individual latch on CSX 2002

The side vents don't do as much as most people think they do. Talk to Morris and read his build thread where he has the pictures of where he and the Kirkhams did wind tunnel tests. The side vents mostly let a little of the hot air out after you stop.

Seems, as big holes cut into the side panels, they could do more than what a heat or wind tunnel test would show. Due to placement, I could see them not being too effective for heat. However, pressure would seem to care less where it finds it's air. I haven't spent time inspecting the steel tube frames on those hoods. I've probably only seen a couple real hoods open, one of which I know was rebuilt/constructed. That was why I guessed that maybe the good scoop was pulling up on the hood, at speed. If it was a pressure situation, I could see where the vents may help. But, I suppose actuall testing would answer.

The latch was also on the 63 Stingrays. May have been a tech requirement instead of a leather belt???? LOL
"Back in the Day" small bore (Sprite, Midget, etc) racing in SCCA used to block up the rear edge of the hood up a couple of inches, I guess because of a high pressure area under the hood. Don't know if it's legal or not these days but it sounds like a good way to exhaust a high pressure area and even add a smidgen of streamlining. It would kill the effectiveness of your turkey pan, though.

Rick, you talking corvette on a cobra site?
Hyde : The same type hood lock was in the Sebring video, on 63 Split Window. Great video.
Just jokin' with ya! I'd love to have Split Window in the garage, next to the FIA.
Hyde: just for that I will send you 3 feet of wet snow:)
Please, not the wet stuff. I like when I can shovel it...
