Dash mount mirror questions again.
So in a previous thread we learned the dash mounted mirror on the street 427Cobra's were finished with a black wrinkle paint on the back of the mirror, the mirror glass surround trim and the bracket that holds the mirror to the stem. The upright stem remains chrome.
So what kind of black wrinkle paint to use. I've tried the VHT Wrinkle paint but it's finish is a mild orange peel at best. And it's very glossy. I remember using black wrinkle paint on my MG back in the 60's and it was very wrinkley to the touch almost rubbing off in flakes. And was a flat to satin finish. I reworked my rear view mirror to more accurately reflect an original several years ago. What worked for me was Krylon Wrinkle Finish paint. The directions said to apply two or three heavy coats. I also hear Krylon works well but don't have experience with it. If a little too glossy you can always dust it with some flat or semi-flat black paint over the top of it.

Here is a tip I wanted to pass on to you. I just painted some additional parts yesterday and after they were painted I put them in a 200 degree oven for about 20 minutes, it really enhanced the wrinkle finish. Hope this helps. Bob |
back in early 70's I would heat the cylinder of my Harley's and then spray on the wrinkle black paint. Deep wrinkles in the paint. Looked great and a tough finish.
Today I painted motor mount adapters for my GT 40 and I heated them to 120 before spraying them. The paint seems harder when dry. I do it a lot on Cobra parts. Dwight |
Thanks for the tips guys. A local restorer suggested two or three spray coats seperated by two of three minutes, let dry for ten to fifteen minutes and heat using a heat gun .
Worked well leaving a pronounced wrinkle finish. Cheers Greg |
Funny story about Wrinkle paint
More years ago than I want to think about I wanted to have what looked like a Black Vinyl roof on a MG1100 that I was REAL proud of (LOL). I got about 10cans of Black Wrinkle paint and commenced to paint the freshly sanded white roof. When I was done it was reminicent of a dark version of a Danial Boone Racoon Cap. The damn thing had a lot of stripes some of which were bordering on glossy. OMG
FYI Heat makes this paint work, along with heavy coats sprayed in 3 different directions. |

What a great story! Isn't amazing what we do trying to make something cool? It reminds me of painting my 64 VW with vinyl paint trying to make the beige upholstery black. BTW, thanks for the Road America Cobra race video. Bob |

My '62 Morris Minor Traveller (yes, the wooden one) got 7" steel wheels (the welded section variety - I was a student) and a huge 2" SU carb with a polished trumpet. Trouble was, it still had the stock 948cc engine... |

You might say it was OVERCARBED and a little sluggish??? About 15 years ago there was a local guy that had a Blown 427 FE in a Morris Minor, all rubber under original fenders, tube frame well engineered. Turned mid 9's in the 1/4 mile and was a handfull. |

Thanks Jeff. I was able to buy an old Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite mirror on e-bay that has the same mirror bracket/clip.
