Engine color?

What color were the original engine blocks?

Mark IV 03-31-2014 04:04 PM

260, 289 or 427? If a 427 what engine (427/428) and what CSX number? Short answer for 98 percent is black.

Funny question but an important one for sure. Back when I was discussing this very question with my prominent engine builder, I suggested a red FE engine block. He responded by saying, " Carrol Shelby never painted an engine anything but black or maybe Ford blue, but I'll paint it whatever you want... even purple... it's your motor".
He sent me pictures of engines painted various colors, well, my engine is black for sure.
HEE!

Let's not leave out the wonderful 428 powered "427" Cobras. After All, there were 100 made that way....
Those blocks were blue.
Small block cars: black

Purple People Eater' would be period correct, or you could go Blue Meanie'.

For a Pre 1966 Car, we use the summit gloss black GM paint. -- it is great stuff and the price is not bad.

the key to a good paint job on an engine is prep, prep and more prep.

the more prep and cleaning, the better the finished product will be.
