Glove box latch
I'm making up the glovebox lid and getting set to line up the latch in the correct place. Can anyone tell me what the tang of the latch fits into in the dash recess, to hold the glovebox lid closed? Was it simply a rectangular hole cut in the dash return flange, or was there any kind of trim or strengthener there?
Thanks chaps
Roger

There is just more "wrap" of the dash panel and the leather on it in the middle of the area the catch tang can get to. Instead of a 90° bend there, think broad 180º bend to line up where the tang will. No cuts in aluminum or leather. I have not tried it but it looks like you would adjust the top edge door fit by adjusting the cross section of that 180º bend.

Ah, thanks Dan. There's plenty of metal to fold so should be OK. Crude, eh?
One shot to get it right...

I would suggest, make your door and cover it as you want and then using some scrap aluminum sheet and leather (same thicknesses as your dash) and do some test mock up bends first. It will be easier if you have a set of T dollies with different diameter rods. Once you find a combination that makes the door edge line up where you want it you can do the dash.

Good tip, thanks Dan.
How thick was the plywood door - 1/2"?

Sorry, don't know that one as I have never removed coverings from any.

Trimmed sheet metal inner cover, 3/8" thick plywood, sheetmetal door.

Nick, are you saying it's a metal/plywood/metal sandwich? I'm sure the old ones I've seen have been all wood with leather or vinyl covering.

All I see with the lock removed is wood inside.

Hey Roger sorry I'm leading you away on 427 ramblings. They are a sheet metal plywood sandwich with flat vinyl glued to the outside. The 289 is more padded or bellied on the outside of the wood? They both have the beaded (piped) edge with the trim covering the hinge and the vinyl bagging when it opens.

Thanks Nick - I thought that was probably what had happened. Repeat after me - small is best!
I'll try 1/2" and 3/8" ply and see which looks best. I'm assuming the hinge is brass and not 'electrobrass', which is a yellow-plated steel hinge.
Just off to the piano shop!

Chrome plated hinge. I have not checked to see it is chrome plated brass or steel. Fixed to the dash with 4 BA X 43/64 chrome plated brass raised counter sink slotted screws, blue steel split spiral lock washer, and chrome plated brass one end only chamfered (machine from hex bar stock) hex nuts. (Screws and washers are the same as fixing Terry's clips in place but in those applications the one end chamfered nuts were bare steel.)

Would some kind soul open their glovebox for me and tell me the dimensions of the hinge?
Thanks,
Roger

Thanks - what width are the leaves? Hinges are available in 20mm, 25mm or 32mm and up (measurement is of the whole hinge in the open position, so a '25mm' hinge would be 1" wide fully open).
