Correct FIA hood scoop ‘grille’
There were a number of different hole layouts for the ‘grille’ fitted to the hood scoop on FIA cars. Any ideas as to which is most correct? Opinions on what might not be correct are welcome too.

Every baffle pictured on any race roadster by SAI when the cars was new was unique, i.e. every one was custom. Cut and shaped to fit. The details of holes was whatever some fabricator cut. Passed down from ex-SAI team members comments include the intention of the "scoop" was not bring in air but gain clearance over the air horns of the most forward Weber carburetors. E. Weber published a design theory and practice manual. There were guidelines for the minimum clearance over the entrances to air horns. With the scoops completely open, which some car crews did, it is said that high speed air flow balance among air horns inlets was not very good. SAI experimented with a variety of scoop sizes, shapes, and heights. Factory photos were taken of different configurations from different directions to show details. The comments from long ago were that the baffles were installed in attempts to control air flow distrubances over the air horns.

+1, it was left up to the individual cars crew. The owner of the 2301 car in the states did a similar hole pattern and used wire mesh behind it, that car had a similar history to 2259.

FYI,
If you look through any of the Cobra related books that are available you can find photos of most any detail item you are looking to ad to your car. The color photos in Friedman's "The Shelby American Original Archieves 1962-1965" has a great color photo of 2259 from the front showing the scoop air diffuser plate. |

how are the grilles fixed under the hood, glued? welded? riveted?

On the original FIA & USRRC 289 Cobras the defuser plate fit inside the scoop and was riveted. The scoop inlet opening was deeper allowing the diffuser plate to be placed inside the scoop and not very visible from the engine compartment side such as on the Kirkham or SAI Continuation Series Cobras which are more often riveted to the vertical lip on the engine compartment side of the hood scoop (similar to the photo Jeff has in his post).
