Early CSX 3xxx Mixed Wheels
Forgive the question if it's been asked, but I've just started to research the early 427 cars in the hopes of doing a tribute build.
One thing I've noticed is that several of the early 427 cars ran FIA wheels, or FIA wheels on front and wineglass style Hallibrands on back. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...44cdea80a3.jpg http://www.virhistory.com/vir/press/full08/rem-045.jpg I'm assuming this was done to accommodate wider rear tires. How prevalent was this practice, and has anyone had the stones to do a replica/tribute car with mixed wheels on it? |
Great observations. I think they used whatever they could find to finish the car at the time. Almost anything goes when it comes to wheels.

Very common on early comp cars....
Mostly FIA "race" wheels on front with Halibrand on rear. (As Dan said I used Halibrand as a style (Cobra II) and not actual MFG) I think the wine glass was a 298 thing. Early sourcing of the wheels were fair at best. There was even note that some cars had Steel spinners on one side and alloy on the other... :D |

After the COBRA II wheel design came out and later the six spoke 8.50 wheel for 427 Cobras almost anything was possible depending on people’s preferences and availability. Legend says Halibrand’s works had a terrible fall out rate (defective wheel castings or machining problems) making new wheels and that helped create availability issues more than once for every design and size. The choices of knock-off nuts were forged carbon steel or forged aluminum. The typical forged steel ones gained red rust fairly quickly as either they were not plated or the plating was so poorly done and thin it didn’t last long. I don’t know about early and mid cars material wise but some middle CSX33xx production cars got aluminum KOs on one side of the cars and steel ones on the other; don’t ask me which side was which as that was long ago now that I started noticing it on a 700 mile from new car. |
Not definitive, but when I bought CSX 3121 in November 1969, it wore the FIA Halibrands front and rear (6-1/2", 8-1/2"). I eventually traded all four for a pair of 9-1/2" Halibrands, having already scrounged up the matching 7-1/2" wheels for the front of my Cobra. The FIA wheels ended up on the Hoppe/Motion drag 427, which, interestingly, just won a blue ribbon at the Amelia Island concours. In the photo of that event, my wheels were still on the car.

I wish those 8-1/2 inch width wheels were reproduced by Tirgo or Vintage. They would be perfect for the rear of my ERA street roadster with undercar exhaust.
