Hi morgy. Here are a few pics from my gallery that are of my jack handle. I think they are correct.

Thanks...

Is the middle section (join) always loose like that or do they come fixed?

Square sleeve is divoted into a hole in one end to lock it on.

The jack side of mine is 55cm. That includes the square coupling. The Tommy Bar side is 56.5cm.

Thanks for that...

Lovely looking took kit!
Only another 6 years to go for me then ;-) So far I've only managed the Grease gun
Is there any other marks/details/stamps on the tommy bar? Sizes etc..

Thanks
Mark

Hi again Mark. The others beat me to the punch. Think of the square sleeve as a slip coupling that allows the two sections of the jack extensions to be taken apart for storage.
The Tommy bar is just a simple steel rod with no markings that I know of.
Question for the experts: Did some of the Tommy bars have a mushroomed head?

Great pic Larry of your great tool kit. Your BDS screwdriver really makes it POP.
Did you refinish the spanner clip.If so, what color did you use?

I was under the impression that the Tommy Bar was 6 inches with a small domed head, Not sure where i got that info from and is probably incorrect hence why i asked....

LMH 05-06-2017 07:38 AM

The Tommy Bar as used in the Cobra didn't have a mushroomed head. Ones used in the Jaguar and some others at the time did but not the Cobra. It's just a simple bar about a foot long.
Its actually not a great design. It would have been better to have a right angle handle to go on the end of jack handle but they were the way they were, so...!

Thanks Greg! I didn't refinish the clip. I didn't wanted the kit to look too perfect and to have a couple pieces vintage looking. The color is kind of a Sky Blue. Think Bugatti Racing Blue like on the Type 35.

Thanks Larry. Mine is patina'd too. Years ago I contacted BDS and they said their records from that far back were purged and they couldn't tell me the color name or paint code.

Ha! I did the same thing Greg! I bet Draper's wondering what the heck is going on with these phone calls asking about 50 year old products!

Hi Larry. I told BDS what I was trying to do with respect to restoring old tools for a Cobra . They were sympathetic, willing to listen, tried to help but came up with nothing.

It seems easier for museums to restore paintings many hundreds of years old than restoring a Cobra tool kit.

But we've made great progress as a community.

Fine job old chaps.

Yeah, I found the same when I talked with them. Really nice people. I even asked if there were any old timers hanging around who used to work there but refused to stay home and retire. They said everyone like that was long gone.
One thing I thought was very cool was that John Draper is current chairman. His grandfather Bert, was the company founder and the "B" in Bert Draper and Sons (BDS). Though much larger today, it's still a family company.
