1965-66 PCV Valve
Where there different types in the PCV valves fitted to Late AC289S/Cobras?
I have seen some Autolite PCV's with a threaded top using the 90 brass adaptor and some with push fit top with the pipe clamped on.. Were these units a standard Mustang part for 66 engines, fomoco part number or still Autolite? Also the the Oil filler and PCV seem to swap sides on different cars, What is the correct side when using a 289 McCord surge tank..... PCV on the left side (LHD drivers side) **) |
That brass elbow/pcv setup was used on leaf springs cars but I'm not sure what was used on the later AC289 cars. There was one of the brass elbows just a couple weeks ago on eBay but I didn't buy it. I have 3 and that's my limit for spares!

Yep, that's Motor's road test of 14th Oct 1967. Not sure who wrote it, but it's reproduced in Brooklands Books' Shelby Cobra Gold Portfolio, 1962-1969, compiled by the estimable R M Clarke.

If any other 289 Sports fans are reading, after the original post I did some hunting and found that AC Cars Ltd apparently used both 1965 made and 1966 made HP289 engines in the small number of cars completed. The three engine assembly dates I recorded to date are 5A22, 6D12, and 6D13.
There were model year variations between engine assemblies, i.e. the parts making assemblies up. That so, I would not expect the exact Ford engine components used on all 289 Sports that were completed. |

I have no idea if five bolt HP289 service engines were being made past August of 1964 as in September 1964 several of the components in all 289 engine assemblies changed to new design revision levels. ) Coil Spring COB/COX61xx chassis COB6105 = 5A22F (probably a Ford six bolt assembly date January 22, 1965) COB6120 = 6D13F (Ford six bolt assembly date April 13, 1966) COX6122 = 6D12F (Ford six bolt assembly date April 12, 1966) COX6126 = shipped to original owner without engine or transmission COB6217 = chassis not completed and sold less engine The Ford serial numbered five bolt engines span an early 1963 to summer of 1964 production time frame. The 5A22 and 5A27 made engines had to be 1965 model year assemblies while the 6D dates represent a 1966 model year engine model. It would be fantastic to come up with day one pictures of these January 1965 engines in these chassis get a look at the clutch bell housings. A good picture of a bell housing would allow visual identification of its five or six bolt design. |

Any one have a copy of Bob Manel's book that could tell me the part number for the Non shellby HiPo 289 PCV valve. From some photos i have i can just make out it is a non threaded type with the vent pipe pushed on with a circular spring clamp around it...
