AC Steering Wheel Badge
Hi , I have bought what may be an original AC steering wheel badge, What do you think ?,
Can anyone show me how it should be mounted to the steering wheel, I believe the split rim wheel has an aluminum bezel with grooves around each spoke. but did the original Badge push in to the steering wheel center , using clips or Rubber O ring? http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...s/AC_badge.JPG thanks Steve |
What does the back look like? Casual inspection of the front face won't tell you if if was:
a) AC Cars from the Cobra production period. b) AC Cars from the 428 Frua production period and service for all cars c) Valley Ford Parts reissue/reproduction of the 428 Frua version d) something else a and b were retained by three tiny spring steel clips with sharp grip points. C uses the same type clip. The Valley Ford Parts are still being sold new with three clips included. Original of (a) are very rare without damage to one or both sides even if just the tiny hair line fractures that years of exposure create in the lens over the AC script. Original (b) are pretty rare but not as rare as (a) because AC Cars provided them as service parts for years post production. The pictures in this ebayŽ offering (not mine) looks like it could be the Valley Ford Parts version. https://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-Cobra-Le...0AAOSwMmBVmjHH |
Thanks
I bought it on Ebay and it is still in transit. the only picture available, looks like it will need cleaning up and may have some damage to the area the clips fit ? I believe it to be of some age.... http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...Badge_Back.jpg |

Based on the picture it appears to be a damaged Cobra production period part. To tell any more would take close up side by side comparison with a known 1963-64 original but it is probably an old production part. Very rare. It looks like some of the boss for the clips is missing or perhaps just hidden by whatever is glued on? For other readers out there, looking old is not a good gauge of originality of anything Shelby or Cobra related because reproductions of just about all emblems and tags was underway very early in the 1970s. |
Dan, if this is the only thing you know in such detail about Cobras, I am already impressed! :-)
If the thread was planted by a mate of yours so that you can show off, I say it's a slick move - lol ;-) Serious: This is some very detailed knowledge. Thank you :-) Not that I ever need to know, but info like this makes me return to this forum. |

An update........ I have taken some more photos, now that I have cleaned up the rear side the three clips are still in place - although they appear to have been removed, and caused some minor damage to the rear which appears to be quite usual from picture of original cobras. this can be shown by illuminating the rear side. hopefully this adds to the possibility of it being a 1960s part ??:D http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...adge_front.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...badge_rear.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...lluminated.JPG |

May I add your image of the reverse side to my files? |
Dan
No problem - help yourself - if you need a higher resolution picture please send me a PM. I received a post from the seller stating that he believed it from a Cobra but was not not able to give any more detail...:D Steve |
Nice find!
