Steering wheel height for 289 Cobra roadsters (ie street dash)
I'm trying to work out whether I should lower my steering wheel so that I can see a little more of my speedometer and tachometer.
My steering wheel is a Moto-Lita split centre wheel (as OEM). On an original car, how much can typically be seen of these two instruments. Yes I know, depends on your height plus other factors ....but any comments are welcomed :) Cheers! Glen |
You can lower the column with the "lollipop" as the dash opening is oval. You will still block much of the speedo. I never understood why the gauge was not raised like on a 427 roadster.

Yes, it is easy to do....in my case there's a spacer to move from one side of the mtg. bracket to the other, and it drops by probably 10mm (3/8"). I can easily reverse it if it doesn't look and feel right. Cheers, Glen |
there is no original height of the steering wheel in original 289, as you can adjust the height very easily
...depends on the height of your legs ;) |

The amount of adjustment is governed by the size of the slot in the dashboard, unless you plan to modify the dash. The 'lollipop' on mine has more adjustment possible than the slot for the column, but I wouldn't want to disturb the leather covering.

Roger, my adjustment is achieved by adding/removing spacers; no 'lollipop'!
Luckily I have enough vertical room in my dash 'slot' to position the wheel to my liking. I'll add some pictures on my build thread. Cheers, Glen |
14" from floor to bottom of wheel per old school AC Cobra drawing. I believe 16" wheel was standard? Tried to attach pic, but unable..

I checked, and mine now measures around 15" from the floor (and my wheel is a 15").
My floor is probably a little lower than an original car ....so I think I'm in the right 'ball park' :) Cheers, Glen |
