Alf, I can call Steve and ask him? I think you have his Email also? I have to call him anyway, with this news. This is been the longest 6months of my life (What with the shakes, fever, everything that go's with withdrawals) :JEKYLHYDE . I brought another Cobra yesterday, it's not healthy to be without a Cobra for long periods of time. Give you the details and pictures later on. Cheers Tom.

Hi Tom

Great to have you back healthy and WITH a new Cobra ;)
Looking forward to get some news in my inbox.

I can not imagine what it means being without a Cobra.
In November I'll celebrate my 25th anniversary.

It is a Smiths Chronometric and utilizes a mechanical drive. There are various models of this tachometer for different applications and where the tachometer drive mechanism is attached to, crankshaft, distributor, camshaft, etc. the drive SAI used was off of the crankshaft with a specially fabricated bracket and gear box, the ratio would have been a 2:1 ratio. There are also different variations of the tach that would have been competition specific with the red needle that would indicate the highest rpm achieved, it also has a reset button for the tattletale needle.
I have this setup on my Cobra, we fabricate the bracket and drive assemblies per the original SAI design..
The tachs have been increasingly hard to come by and are fairly expensive when found. Make sure the tach. You get fits the application, Nisonger can do repairs and ratio conversions also.
If you would like more info email me directly at jkb5 at sbcglobal.net
The correct tachometer with the tattletale feature is an RC83. EX2

Alf,

There are Smith chronometric tachometers available that look virtually identical to the difficult to find RC 83 that might interest you. Typically though, they don't have the red tell-tale needle, but all other details are very close to the Smiths RC 83.

English bikes (Nortons and Vincents, for example) were often equipped with these 80mm tachometers, and they are available at incredibly cheap prices ....say, around AUD40 here in Aus.

Here's one...

Cheers!
Glen

Also, this table might be of some use to determine the differences....

Some times the old Smiths logo tachs were used.
