You can find on 2001, that the street style door shaped into the bulkier rear flare. A very unique body. I'm guessing this was the inspiration to the cutback style.. to flow around the the happy little flare on future big wheel cars!

The old school tires are much larger diameter than today's tire.
The cut back was an attempt at getting larger tires on the cars. 289's ran large diameter to get the width. Tire technology has come along a bit...
