What did I have back in 1975?
Happy to be here, and hoping to learn more about what I may have had back in 1975.
I’m waiting for mods to ok my first post, which, from what I understand, can take awhile, as it contained a link. That link was to photos of the car I owned being rebuilt “from parts”. I don’t see much online of photos showing a rebuild process, so pics of frame/chassis details seem rare. My hope has been to better identify what I may have had. Bill of sale, a hastily written thing, says 1962 AC Cobra “build from parts”. For all I know, it may have been in the process of a rebuild of a crashed Cobra, or an AC Ace that was being converted for a 260. The pics strike me as being from about 1968 to 1971. A friend of my brother’s heard I wanted to sell and put me in touch with a guy. The buyer’s name, as I heard it, was Moe Garlic. It may have been, more likely?, something like Morris Gaerlic.
About two years ago, the friend of my brother showed up at a yard sale I was having. I asked about the car and “Moe Garlic”. He laughed at his memory of him and said that Moe had passed away, however recently I don’t know. This friend also said he had no idea of what became of the car. |

It looks like the main frame could be Cobra. Pedals, suspension and springs look Cobra. Wheels are early 5.5" wide. R&P steering. If the wheels and steering rack are from the same car, that would put the original chassis number between CSX2126 and CSX2159.

Thank you, LMH for that valuable info! It feels like I may get traction on this. I don’t know what the steering column might have been from. When I had the car, the engine and transmission were missing.

Dan and I were chatting by email about your car and he pointed out a couple things I hadn't noticed. Rear shocks are on the wrong side of the control arms to be Cobra. Half shafts and differential don't appear to be Cobra either. I don't recognize the cover though. Can't see much of the front suspension, so hard to tell there but I think he's correct. This is an Ace... or rather part of an Ace.

Looks like the builder was planning on some very large doors.

The steering wheel reminds me of a Beetle's. The scuttle hoop, where the door hinges are attached, should be curved to fit under the ally body. Unless the piece was moved in far enough to clear the radius.
Someone could have fitted a 289 or even 427 body on it without knowing exactly how the frame looked under the skin. I.e. where the spare wheel sits. But it could have meant to receive a totally different body, like an equivalent of the Willment Ghia Cobra (Fiat 8V Supersonic) on a 427 chassis. Agree on 289 or ACE chassis. Am I missing something here, or is the OP telling us he was building this car from scratch using parts he searched for, found, and purchased over time, and he does not know what he was building or purchasing parts for? This is pretty strange stuff, at least at first glance.
How would you know what to search for, let alone purchase and then use to build your project car, if you didn't know what your project car was?? |

Great pictures of that project. I would say it was never a "cobra" or and Ace but the chasis was from an AC Aceca ( the coupe). They have a different differential mounting from the Ace wich had the diff housing welded right into the chassis, the Aceca had a rubber mounted one more like the CSX / COB / COX series but the structure around it is somewhat different in the end.
