Which oil cooler is more "original", Kirkham or Mocal?
So, I'm getting around to plumbing the oil cooler. I have 2 units, a black one that came with the Kirkham, and a grey Mocal unit. There are subtle differences, but other than the color, the Mocal unit has Male threads, while the Kirkham has female. I wouldn't normally be so picky, but since I've got both units....I did think that Mocal was used origially, but don't know for sure.
Another thing, I'm going to run a t-stat in line with the oil cooler. I've seen them mounted on the sidewall in front of the radiator, just in front of the oval hole in the bulkhead that the oil lines pass through into the engine bay. Is there any advantage to putting it there as opposed to in the engine bay, just on the other side of that oval hole? It would seem to be easier to get to in that spot. I was always under the impression that the original Cobras used a Mocal cooler. My suggestion is not to worry so much about originality because the cars changed as they evolved and it's possible to see original Cobras with several different layouts of the same parts. Just enjoy yourself and do whatever makes you happy. After all, your car is a REAL car albeit a replica.

The Originals used Coventry oil coolers.

I agree, it would be reasonable that you'd get a better reading in the engine compartment. After talking to Tom Kirkham, I think I may have to scrap the whole system anyway. He says my -10 lines are too small for my 427S/O, and the thermostat is not needed. Says that he's always just run -12 lines without the t-stat, and has been fine. Anyone else want to chime in with their experience? Bud Man, Coventry made the originals,eh? Well, I may have to stall awhile before I buy my third oil cooler. I don't think the wife would understand the purchase of yet another one. Thanks, Ron R |

My Kirkham uses #12 oil cooler lines. I think the advantage is less fricton and more volume. I think Morris is using the thermostat, but his is engine is a complete racing setup. See you soon Maurice |
