Fia Guys Footbox Coating
I have noticed that most of the comp cars had the inside of the footboxes painted black. Any suggestions as to what type of coating to use that will last?

i used spray paint. you will have to do touch-ups periodically to maintain a as new look otherwise it developes into a patina or worn look.

Sounds Good, Thanks! I don't mind a worn look just wouldn't be appealing to see a big tan wear spot on a black floor

Truck bed liner. Black and tough.

The truck bed liner crossed my mind but it doesn't really give the same finish. The cars I've seen up close look like they have a coating of semigloss over unfnished fiberglass. That's pretty much the finish I'm after.

Just order the car with the last layer of glass in the foot boxes having added a layer black resin for finish, just like all the "trick carbon fiber" parts you see, and you will have a permanent black finish. At least, a never paint anymore finish. grumpy |
I didn't think of that. I'll talk to my paint n body supply guys to see if they have any blck resin.

If they don't, I can send you a right/left 3/4" woven roving torn to the bottom of the shape and a quart of the black. Then it would be a simple matter of wiping the bottom area of RL foot boxes with acetone to beak down the surface for good adhesion, tape off any overlaps, splice areas, etc, to eliminate the resin from running thru. Lay in the 3/4 oz. and with a 1"-1.5" pure bristle brush load up the roving until saturated, let cure, then spray with semigloss urethane on the sides and the new bottom. As it wears off from use you will never know it since the layer will be over 1/6" thick and wear like the devil. grumpy |

I talked with the local Linex guy, he did the interior of my YJ. He said that the pebbled finish is the last step and dosn't have to be done.

Hi Fellas, a suggestion from over the pond.
If you want an extremely durable black finish ( like black flo coat ) on the rough side of a moulded fibreglass piece, use por15. I've used both chassis black (semi gloss) and the por15 corrosion protection stuff ( full gloss) and have had excellent success. It will not wear off with normal use (short of sanding) and becomes one with the glass. It will wear better than the gel coat on the finished side of your glass mouldings. Anyone with some por15...give it a try....you'll be impressed. Just brush it on. Cheers |

Foot Box Coating
I second the POR15. Used it on many pieces where scuffing or rust was a problem and it works great. I think I'll do my foot boxes too.
