"Useless Trivia" for the FIA replica fans...

While doing some research for an article on an early race, I found this little bit of trivial info that may amuse the FIA replica fans..

You always see Coupes and FIA-style replicas built with the "map light" on the outside of the door, to illuminate the meatball numbers...

http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...0/maplight.jpg

Well, first, the real cars were only configured with these light for the 12 and 24 hour 'endurance' races, like Sebring and Daytona...and further, they were only used starting in 1964.

In 1963...they cleverly used spare license plate light assemblies to illuminate the numbers... not as pretty, but they did the trick.

These images are from 1963...

I am really glad I didn't drill the 3/4 inch hole in my door to install t:eek: he first lights you displayed!

I like the well thought out and hi tech "screen" to protect the radiator from road debris. Wonder how many times a hole in the radiator ended a race before they figured that one out.

Thanks Ron, I didn't know that and never noticed it in photos before. I'll have to go back and see if I can find the early lights in some of the books I have.

But none of the cars shown above are FIA's.

Here's an original FIA:

You are correct Bob...they are Sebring cars...

...but I couldn't get the attention of the small block guys if I said, "...for the Sebring replica guys"

The interesting thing is that the door light was NOT installed on those cars for the majority of races... it's almost like they swapped doors around.

I only see the map light on the cars configured for Daytona, Sebring, Reims and LeMans... all the long races.

Same guys, in short races...no door lamps.

I love this stuff!!!! Thanks Ron and Bob for the cool details.

So Allan, you gonna run a 'license plate' light on your door?

Allan A 07-12-2006 07:45 PM

Ernie,

Why not, I was thinking about adding a trucker set of lights all around the car in yellow. Hahha

Again,
Ron you are always on top of these tidbits that we all love, and with Bob's help we all gain in our look at these babies.
Thanks bunches,

Here's another FIA detail that I've never seen. Look at the wind deflector along the top of the windshield on the driver side. Cool, huh? This photo is in the new Legate book.

strictlypersonl 07-17-2006 08:56 AM

I think that Dan Gurney's car had that.

Also did you note the manf. plate on top of the oil cooler shrouding?
