Which "viking blue" looks most like the
original 1964 team viking blue color? I'll give you my thoughts.. Pics 1 and 7 are too blue, pic 3 is too green, pic 2 is too gray or correct?, pics 4, 6, 8 and 9 look the most "correct". What do you think? Thanks.

Hate to say this, but trying to determine an exact color on a computer screen using photographs from different sources is impossible.
To get correct color renditions, the (digital) camera and computer screen have to be matched. What any color looks like to you on you computer will probably look completely different on any other monitor. For that matter, printer color profiles have to be matched, too - for specific types and brands of paper. Try printing a picture of a "Viking Blue" Cobra on el cheapo photocopy paper, 24 lb. 96 brightness premium inkjet paper, and two brands of inkjet photo paper. You will get four shades of "Viking Blue". I guess that's O.K., because the Viking Blue coming out of Shelby's Venice shop had a W-I-D-E variance also. P.S.: Lighting has a tremendous effect on color. Sunlight, cloudy daylight, incandescent, halogen and flourescent lighting all make a BIG difference. I took the photos of Lynn Parks' FIA roadster below. Totall agree with STG. If you look in my gallery, you'll notice that the color of my car is completely different in almost every one. But here are my paint codes:
PPG-DBU is System 3753 Code E Sherman Williams is UX 7262 62-63 Ford Code E |
Allen's color, in person, is pretty doggone close to what Viking blue looked like new. Not bad for a replica. :rolleyes:
I checked my files and here is some original info that may be of some additional help: Viking blue was a '62 - '63 Ford/ Mercury color code E. It was NOT the Lincoln or T-Bird code E, which is different. The NAPA/ Martin Senour cross-reference is 30Y-3233. The Sherwin-Williams cross-reference is M30-J-1448. |

I was up at ERA Saturday to take pictures of my FIA (2111) and had one H of a time getting a camera angle that acurately resulted in a displayed color that matched what I saw with my eyes. Most pictures came out either two dark or washed out. The best thing about digital is that you don't have to wait for the photos to be printed!
Personally, I think that blue is one the most difficult colors to match. Have you checked with Tony for suggestions about which color may be "most accurate" for Viking blue? He has been painting these for years and is familiar with all of the original colors. BTW - Obviously I didn't see your car since it's at Tony's now, but I did see your roll bar ready either for chrome or powdercoat. Sorry, didn't get a picture. |
Tony recommended I print out a picture of the blue I liked best.. I don't know much about paint but I think he has to mix pigment to get the right looking blue.. I'll make sure he gets that PPG code.. Thanks Allan. Yeah, I ordered a black powder coated roll bar.. :) I put my first 5k down last Jan.. Time flys..

You can take 10 different pictures of the same car and get 10 different colors
depending on the lighting, angle, etc as has been already stated. I never realized just how true it was until I had my coupe painted. Inside out of the light, it looks silver. Out in the bright sunlight, it looks blue. Overcast sky and it really looks like a different blue. While I wanted Viking Blue, the MAACO shop I was dealing with said Sherwin Williams didn't have the color available in a 2 stage paint, only a single stage. Since I wanted base/clear, Sherwin Williams said the closest match available in a 2 stage was 1985 Porsche Lite Iris Metallic which is what my coupe is painted. http://www.lbisunsets.com/Coupe-1/PICT2007.JPG |
And I don't think image #7 (the #19 car) is Viking Blue at all. That looks Guardsman Blue to me.
