How big were Shelby's Meatballs?
OK, I suspect that the size of the meatballs/rondelles varied somewhat back in the day, but does anyone KNOW the size most commonly used on the 427 comp/sc cars back in the sixties? Was it regulated by SCCA etc, or was there some leeway? Same goes for the numbers, what was the common size used? Was it mandated?
I've seen claims of 16 and 20 inches front and sides, and 17 and 19. Yes, this is an anal question. But I figure the originality forum is where all you rivet-counting anal guys hang out. :) |
ERA says 19" for their FIA car. I used 18". 19" was a little tight between the side louvers and the front edge of the door opening. The numbers ranged between 11 and 12 inches high.

Never measured Ol Shel's, but mine come in at 19" and 18" respectively (19 on sides, 18 on the nose and decklid). I've even posted pics of my large white meatballs in my gallery. ;)
Seriously, I've never seen official meatball measurements in any of the books I've read (because many of them probably varied from car to car, race to race), but 19" has always looked right when comparing mine to all the vintage photos that are available. |
I don't think Shelby ever made meatballs, just chile. But, if he did, they probably weren't more than about 2 inches. :D

The size of Shel's meatballs? Hmmmmm, I really hope and pray that no one here actually knows the answer to this one!!!  :3DSMILE:   But considering what he has accomplished in the Car world, I would have to guess they are really BIG! IMHO!:D

Perhaps Mrs. Shelby is the one to ask? :)
