Ron can correct me if I'm wrong but I think the original 427 comp cars (1965) did not have flares on the rear fenders.

When they were configured as S/C's, a flare of as much as nearly one inch was added to the rear fender lip. |
I have only a limited number of cars with which to base these comments, but all 4 of the 428 Cobras I have seen (or have photos of) have their original engines and one is still in the hands of the original owner. All four of them have only one carburetor on the 428 PI intake. The radiator expansion tank was Ford blue, like the engine, so that is another difference for the 428 cars. The subject of the steering wheel centers and Sunburst wheels has been discussed before and were unrelated to the switch to 428 engines, although many of the 428 cars did have Sunbursts originally. I have not examined the 427 and 428 engines with a comparison of differences in mind, but I suspect the fuel pump, alternator, and distributor are probably different as well. I don't know about the exhaust manifolds and under car exhausts, but I doubt the exhausts were different although the manifolds probably were. I'll pay attention to this next time I see unrestored original cars to see what I can determine.

"for example, at least two late 427S/Cs had their paperwork re-schnookered to show a 1967 model year on the invoice, even though the cars were 1965 vintage and invoiced in 1966" Computerworks
I can't remember the article I read, but I remember reading that old Carroll had 5 S/C's left at the end, that he just couldn't "unload." I remember the article saying that he finally had to drop the price to $5,000. each, just to move them. Anyone else read this article or is it just this old mind of mine, playing tricks on me again? |
Shelby got them all out of the house by November of 1966... at least on tissue to dealers.
I recall reading some sat at the dealers for a remarkably long time. |
