Restoration and replacing original parts
I'm having an interesting delimna while restoring a 1962 Austin Healey 3000 for a friend/customer. He wants to replace a number of original pieces with 'after market' or 'replica' parts and has no interest in keeping the original bits and pieces.
Suddenly it became clear how someone restoring a Cobra could offer up for sale various original pieces, perhaps years later. My first thought when I see these parts is, "How did that guy get them and why were they removed from the car during the restoration?" Well, it's starting to make sense now! I think I will hold on to the original bits and pieces as the customer does not want them. Ethics question? Hmmmm, maybe that original ash tray will find a home in my ERA after all. Same one used in the Cobras you know... |
Conventional wisdom on restoration of any significant car is to tag and bag all original parts that are replaced for, say, cosmetic or safety reasons.
The parts, staying with the car, is supposed to enhance the overall value. |
I will point that out to my friend and offer to do so on his behalf.

...be sure to tell him that you r-e-a-l-l-y like the old ashtray. :p

Ernie,
You don't smoke that many cigars do you? |

Head lights, brakes, a lens or two......... hmmmmmmm.

Excaliber; Has your friend been sniffing glue??? It is TOTALLY INSANE to not put every original piece back on a 1962 Austin Healy that it came into the shop with!! It's a 1962 car, for God's sake! It is SUPPOSED to look a little old!
Your friend will be obligated morally and legally to provide full disclosure about the history of this car when he sells it. Any serious car guy who loves Healy's will poop in their drawers when they find out many of the original pieces are missing. It nothing else, they should be cataloged in zip lock bags, and stored WITH THE CAR, not left orphans in someone's shop! Go find a stick and beat your buddy! He should have a fiberglass car, not an original Healy! |
