Pent-Roof Valve Covers and which air cleaner?

Hi guys,
I have stroked 351w that I want to look like a 427. I picked up a set of chrome pent roof valve covers that I want to use. So my question is what air cleaner is more accurate? I've seen people using the Turkey Pan with the Snellings air cleaner, and I've also seen people running a 289 style 14" air cleaner.

Did the 427's run a 14" air cleaner or where they all the Snellings style?

Thanks,
Steve V.

Always the smaller one.

Thanks Ron.

I have been told that the original style, Snellings style aircleaners restrict the air intake, (not enough surface area = less performance)
I have heard this previously, but I recently confirmed it from a friend who road raced Cobras back in the day, he is currently wrenching on Orig. Cobras, Shelby Mustangs and GT 40's for a local racer. He said he used the 14" style. I said I did not like "the look", he suggested the oval style aircleaner.

You can use a less restrictive air filter in you S&H. Some of the people here use the K&N E1015. I used the E2570 on my Classic. The 2570 is the right diameter and the height is 2.5 inches. If you want to maintain that "correct" look, use E9181. It is an almost exact replacement for original and you can use the wire mesh screen, for an even more "correct" look. There are a couple of older threads that go into this issue pretty thouroughly.:) http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/era-speak-bob-putnam/71700-k-n-part-number-stellings.html http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41977

Is there any way to run a wire mesh screen with the K&N E1015 to keep that original look but get better air flow? If so, where can I get the screen?

Do a search under my screen name on the subject. I did a nice comparison between the few filters that fit the S&H air cleaner, and also showed how I kept the screen with the K&N under it.

It's a Stelling and Hellings on Comp and SC cars usually surrounded by the Turkey Pan. The big 14" Autolite was also correct but on street cars.

The exterior screen, the sheet metal with all the small holes is the restrictive item. If you use a filter regardless of diameter or design that is only 2.5" tall the choke housing if left intact will allow very poor airflow. Take note of the design in the HP series of Holley Carbs sans choke housing and with radiused edges and corners. THAT design will flow a lot more air.

Ron, I have very, very ,very rarely disagreed with your incredible knowledge of all things Cobra. However, more than a few original "427" Cobras (non-SC versions) came with a large air cleaner, including the single carb 428 engined CSX 3200-3300 cars and the 3300-3360 cars with single carbs.
The last of these used the 1966 style chrome air cleaner found on HIPO Mustangs, not the dome top air cleaners the 289 Cobras used.

Jim...you're input is always valued so corrections and clarifications are always welcomed.

In this case, my "always" response was keyed to the air-cleaner with pentroofs question. It was a "collar and cuff" thing. :p

I always tend to answer from a Comp-look perspective, anyhow. ;)

Later cars would usually have had cast alum covers.

Thanks Sal, that's a good look!

you can use an air filter from what ever you want that little 351w will never look like the mighty FE.............only an FE looks like an FE........

Ron, Thanks for the clarification. CSX 3346, with 2190 miles on it, has the pentroof valve covers and the 1966 HIPO Mustang air cleaner, which I feel certain are original to the car. I have sent you a PM. Jim
