how many 427 cars had 427 ci engines

Hey Gang,
I was reading another blog/site where the subject turned into "how rare the true 427ci side oiler engine was." A statement that only 8 cars of the 350 cars sold truly had the 427ci and the other 42 cars really shipped with 428 police interceptor engines." No credits or proof was offered so I started looking for real numbers??

I did find a few number claims like the ones below but they do not talk about true engine production stats. "(Only 356 production 427 Cobras were ever built by Shelby American,)"

How about Ron and others, how many of the fabled 427 cars sold had the true side oiler?

Most big block cars were 427s. I have heard that some cars came through with top oiler blocks, but were still 427s. The 428s came in some of the street cars, with an option for the 427 (although they didn't quite make that too public) and then they went back to 427s for the rest of the run because of the complaints.

I am sure Ron probably has more detailed data on it, but I can assure you that more then 8 Cobras had 427s :).

Thanks Sal,
8 true side oilers seemed very wrong and it kinda suprised me so I read again to make sure I was not reading 8 did not have the 427.

The generally accepted numbers are:

All comp cars and all SC cars had 427 SO
CSX3101 - CSX3199 427 TO
CSX3200 - CSX3299 428 PI
CSX3300 to the End 427 SO

CSX3183 03-01-2008 08:44 AM

427's

Tom is correct.

My experience fits with the list shown. CSX 3121 was delivered with a 427 TO engine with what were called in the 60s "low riser" heads.

Those numbers are close enough. Factory records suggest the first few 33xx cars came with 428's, and then the swap to the 427 side-oiler was made.

As for the often-quoted phrase that "Shelby American built 356 427 Cobras," a check of the breakdown at the top of the originality forum will show that there were fewer than 315 made, with allowances for whether or not one considers a bare chassis a Cobra.

So if you use 350 or 315 as the total of BB cars then around 153 cars had the 427 SO.
Appreciate the info. and help Jeff c

That was a good question. Quick math would say about a 3rd, interesting.
