How about this: The baffles were found originally only on the 289 comp cars and their purpose was to help stabilize the air above the some-what sensitive Webers. Tom

...except for the fact that CSX3002 didn't have Webers. :-)

They probably found that it stabalized the air flow over the turkey pan as well otherwise at high speeds the air flow over the turkey pan and around the airfilter would create a vaccum thus trying to suck air out while carb trying to suck in.
