Original Chassis Plate Etching
Hi,
I want to etch my VIN plate with my chassis number in the original style. Can anyone tell me how is was done and is there a way to replicate it without buying a special tool? My current one is stamped and it looks a little heavy handed. Thanks, Paul |
Paul,
I believe the originals were hand stamped one character/digit at a time using alpha numeric machinist's punches. I have been around several original 289s recently and one original 427. I did not look at the 427's plate but the 289s were both hand stamped. Ed |
All the original plates I have seen on 427's "appear" to be all hand written with some type of etching tool.

Paul,
Car's manufactured by AC Cars Ltd in England were stamped. When the SC's were completed by Shelby, the chassis plates were scribed. I've got a photo to prove it.:) |
