Painting engines
Hey guys
Did good ol' CS, or Ford for that matter, paint the engine blocks in the 427 S/C cars? If so what color were they painted and what was painted (block,heads,water pump)? Thanks |
Depends on whether you want to emulate an early S/C or Comp...or a later S/C.
Early S/C and Comp had block and heads black, with alum water pump. ('65 vintage). I would leave the pump bare. Later S/C ('66-67) could/would have Ford blue block, heads and water pump |

I powdercoated all of my engine, the accessories and components. Makes it a breeze to clean and withstands the heat. You increase the gloss by adding more coats of powder. Chris |

Thanks for the info, since my block is a 65 it looks like black it is. Ron I think we will be talking a lot here about origionality. Do you have a site with picsa etc or know of one that will help research my build with pictures? Chris Have you had any heating issues with the powdercoat? Did you use a special brand powder? Thanks guys |

I've not had any heating issues. That was some time ago and I am a friend of wine. My powdercoater is Ziffle Manufacturing, 209-754-0509, I'm sure Alan can answer that question. That was 2003, no problems. Chris |

Funny you asked, I had Southern Automotive build my FE. I suggested that they paint the block "red". Bill Parham (owner of SA) said, " Carrol Shelby never painted a block red". He then said, I'll paint your block any color you want it, but originals weren't red..they were black". Bill then sent me pictures of several differeent colors of FE engines including a red one.
Well, I went with black block, alum. heads and water pump and it looks very original with the red bellhousing. Point is, Bill Parham was was right. Bill |

When you powdercoat the heads, place a dummy, removable, washer on the head bolt seats. DO NOT allow powdercoating on the head bolt seats, the head bolts will not seat properly and you will leak at the head gaskets. PM me if you want to talk more. Chris |

A small detail but I have seen unmolested black 427's with a crayon or chalk X on them. I believe it was a QC thing.
