1963 289??? I was pretty sure the 289 did not come on line till late 64. Wasn't the 260 the small V8 in 63?? After all the 64 Mustang came with a 260 till around the end of 64 when it went to the 289. Shelby first used the 260 in the AC and went to the 289 when it came out.
Could be wrong has happened before.

289s did surely come out in 1963. They are not listed in some of the early literature though.

289s were available in Fairlanes and Galaxies in 1963, likely other full size Fords as well

I had a 63 Fairlane Sport Coupe that had the 289 "271" HP engine. Genuine K code car. Your right about the 5 bolt pattern.
These were high winding engines that could make serious HP.
Some one will get a good deal. Even if you have a 221/260, only takes a bore to make it a standard 289. These engines had a good cast material and were extremely strong.

OOP's, sorry to disagree on this, but the first 289's did not come out of the windsor assembly plant until March 13th of 1964 with a C3AE-N casting code...........Post the actual casting numbers off the block here, and I'll tell you what you really have on your hands.............

That was what I thought also. However we are both wrong. I got out some of my old repair manuals and Ford did have a 289 in 63. The 289 2v was a code 2 on the vin and the 289 4V was a code 3. Straght out of my 65 Chilton's Flate rate and parts manual.
I know I learned something new.

Have to disagree with Mr. Mustang AND Goober, this time.

The Ford 289, and indeed the 289/271 HiPo WERE available in 1963. I recall a gal I went to HS with had one in her family - a gold, 2 door sedan 1963 Fairlane 289 HiPo! Granted, her Dad worked for Ford, but it was an RPO (Regular Production Option) in 1963.

As far as "just bore out your 221/260 to a 289" - nope. Pretty risky, and not a very good idea. Ford's "Muscle Parts" books from the 70's say that you CANNOT just bore out the 221 (3.5" bore) or 260 (3.8" bore) to the 4.0" bore diameter of a 289. Not only will you be stuck with a 5 bolt bellhousing (parts are tougher to find all the time), but you will likely hit the water jackets before you get to a 4.0" bore (the block castings are different).

The same Muscle Parts books list the 289 @2V and 289 HiPo as RPO engines for Fairlane in 1963.

I have no doubts that this engine could be a 289, and it would make a sweet piece in an early ('64.5) Mustang or a 289 Cobra (which most had 5-bolt engines, anyway).

I'm starting to feel really old. I had a 62 Fairlane with a 221CID engine. 145 big horsepower, tube radio(am only), 13 inch tires and a 3 speed on the column. Second gear was up to the roof!

You need to check your facts before you jump in with alleged accusations of a person's veracity---I know David-- what he presents is true.

My folks bought a 63 Galaxie new in 63---and my father was impressed with the power of the "289" option he'd ordered--

And knowing David I would have every confidence in that engine being as what he says it is.


Do some research -- the reason CS couldn't initally get the 289 was because FOMOCO wasn't fully geared up to produce them and offered them only on a limited basis in select cars in their line-up, Hi end Ford, some Lincolns and I belive Hi end Mercury(?)

It appears by mr mustang's statement and G.R.'s clarification that you have a "rare" engine available which should make it THAT more valuable.
Maybe Bill can give you a reputable appraisal of its real worth?

289's were avaliable in 63,I have a good friend that to this day still has his 63 Fairlane he bought new then with a 289 HiPo motor in it.....It is a K-code car,four speed,all original,occasional driver,and no it is not for sale.......

As usual, someone tries to sell something and folks with opinions jump in and before you know it...

Let's get back to David's motor, a 1963 289 built by a guy that goes that extra mile on everything he does.





Bill...it would be extra special if you didn't jump in with your opinions on "sale" threads...especially if a little more research might be in order.

Well, I guess that's as good an apology as you're gonna get David. I am closing this thread and starting a new one with your original post...before the stuff where Bill essentially stuck his nose in it.

Bill...I do hope you get the point and recall the time a few weeks ago when you asked me to restart a thread for you when others jumped in and sidetracked it...just as you did here. Utilize a PM or an e-mail if you feel you absolutely have something to opine about what a seller has posted.
