9" posi trac/traction loc 3rd member
Heres the deal;
Building a 65 Mustang to Vintage race,I have a 28 axle spline detriot locker I'm going to use and a 31 spline traction loc/posi trac unit also... My 65 fastback street car has a trac loc 28 spline rear end in it and I want to keep everything 28 splines........I have a few different gear ratios I'm going to use depending on the track I'll be running.... I would like to swap with someone the 31 spline trac loc unit for a 28 spline trac loc unit,NO gears included or housing,just the trac loc unit,mine is in very good shape,I have taken it apart to inspect and the clutchs look like new..... Any takers???????????? The only costs would be shipping and my zip is 71351,I'm in central Louisiana and would drive darn near anywhere in the state to swap out....... Maybe I should have put this under "Parts Wanted". David |
David: If you have no takers you may be able to find A BLOWN UP 28 spline unit that you can buy the parts from to convert your existing assembly to 28 spline. Very few parts needed to convert.
Just a thought. Rick |
Dave, I think I have the gears/guts to make it a 28 spline. I am not sure, but if you are intersted I will then venture out to the barn and find the blasted bag of parts.
Let me know. I mean if you have the gears and parts, all you do is a complete rebuild... right? |
Rick; I've been looking for one for a while,have not found anything....
Trularin; Great,actually all I need to convert to 28 spline is the splined hub in the carrier,I have a couple of 28 spline axle gears laying around,I'd have to find them..... I call it the "hub",not sure what it is supposed to be called,but it is where the clutches go and is splined to 28 or 31 depending on the axle...if you also have the axle gears,I'd take them also,my clutch pack is like knew and I will reuse it....I also have an extra clutch pack and a few other parts as I usually do not throw away anything......... A 28 spline axle will go into a 31 spline carrier as the 28 spline is a little smaller diameter,but 31s will not go into a 28 spline carrier for the same reason..... Actually on my street Mustang,the trac loc unit was a 31 spline unit out of a truck that I converted to 28 spline 10 years ago when I got it.... trularin,let me know what you have and what you want for the parts.......... Thanks; David |
Okay Dave, I'll check this out tonight and get your address. I was doing the same thing until I came across axels that fit the housing.
I think I have several extra parts, so if one doesn't look good, use the better. |
trularin;
Thanks.I'll be waiting for your reply.............. David |
Dave, Looks like your in luck.
I have four drive gears, with shims, and two idlers. As I recal, you disassemble the center section and remove the 31 spline gears and install the 28 spline gears. Then you run the pinions through and die them. check the pattern before you assemble the rest of the rear end. It's like doing the ring and pinion, only smaller. So, send me your address and I'll get those to you. |
