Only one left! Cobra racing windshield.
I thought I had a buyer for my last windshield cut from Lexan MR10. But, I guess not. You can see the description on my eBay ad for Item 8046891869.

Paul, Great Stuff MR10. I made one of MR10 for my cobra and it cost me nearlly $200. It is also 126 times more impact resistant than glass. Good luck selling it. It is price fair. Ken

Would it fit a Shell Valley kit? I've heard the rake of the windshield is different.
|
CaliCobra,
The rake of the windshield is determined by the angle that you bolt the uprights to the body of the car. The windshield is a separate piece that fits between the two uprights. It is held to them with 4 screws on each side. If your windshield is a standard Cobra size, then it will fit. On a side note, during the early racing days of the Cobra, some of the windshields would "mysteriously" develop a lot more rake during the race. At the tech inspection after the race, it would be right back in it's full, upright position. Isn't that strange? If you're in LA, we can meet and try it for size. Paul |

Cali,
I just called Shell Valley and they tell me that they made two basic shapes of windshield frames. They changed over in 1992. The basic change was in curvature. That is, the later windshields were more rounded. He says the size is about the same. So, since my windshield is based on an original 1960's Cobra frame, it will probably fit your car if it was built before 1992. If it is later than that, it might or might not. It can easily be curved more, but I do not know if the dimentions are exactly the same. He has the later windshield glass in stock at $290.00. They no longer have the early glass. It's up to you! Do you plan to continue to offer these MR-10 winshields for the Cobra crowd? I too have an MR-10 sheet I purchased on another Cobra forum and cut it to fit as a replacement winshield. In almost 2 years, I've had great success with using this as a winshield. It is incredibly light and optics are equivalent to glass.

Drew,
Once I am certain that they fit correctly, I may stock up to make more. I am waiting for feedback from Michael. His should arrive next week. Thanks for your input on this material. I REALLY like the way it looks on my car. I was hoping to run a rally with it tomorrow, but the weather looks pretty bad. CaliCobra, What do you think about taping two sheets of newspaper over your windshield and tracing a line just inside the frame. Then, send it to me and I will make sure my piece will fit? Paul |
I would definately be interested in one of your Lexan Windshields. Are you offering a CC discount? :D
Let me know when more are available. My glass windscreen lasted until I crossed the 1st set of rough railroad tracks......... CRACK!!!! Thanks RZ |
Paul, not sure if you're having these made for sale, or just had one left over. Realize I'm way too late for this one, but I am interested. A stone chip the the fwy. cracked my spf windshield and I'm looking for a more durable replacement. Old SPF, so should be original Cobra shape. Thanks for any info.

Tom,
There's a lot of work and not much money in this business. However, I finally found a supplier for the MR10 material and I have a good, proven template for cutting the windshield shape. If $199.00 plus shipping is OK with you, I will make you one. For $50.00 more, I will make you a couple of the oversize windwings that I have come to love. They fit more tightly to the windshield frame and are two inches wider at the bottom. Installed at the proper angle, they make a HUGE difference in the buffeting of your arm and shoulder. For people who drive their cars a lot, it really makes the beast more bearable. I am pleased to say that all the windshields that I have sold have fit the various frames, OK. In one case, a little had to be trimmed off the top edge. This stuff is amazingly clear and cleans very easily. I ran a long rally a couple of months ago and and ran through a lot of rain. I had to clean the bugs off many times and the harded surface is still perfect. Paul |
Thanks for the info, Paul. I'll be back in San Diego in a week or so (where my car is) and make a decision. I'd probably drive to Northridge to pick it up, one of my kids is in LA. Not very worried re the D.O.T. certification. Any problems with bowing from wind pressure on the track? Probably don't drive enough to justify the larger wings, but I'll think about that, too. Best way to contact you is this thread?

Hi Tom,
I sent you an PM with both my email addresses. Paul |
I too am interested in getting one of these for my "early" SPF (just like Tommy T's below)...
One thing, have you run into any pitting problems with this lexan usder long term use? I am unfamiliar with MR10, can you polish pits out of that material? I have 3 early SPF windshield frames to play with here.... Please PM me the info too if you would... Thank a TON! Pat |
Hi Pat,
No, no pitting in the new MR10 yet. It's been pelted with all kinds of road rubbish and gravel while following (and passing) other rally cars, too. I only clean it with Microfiber cloths. However, I am using RainX windshield cleaner spray. On my old standard Lexan windshield, this stuff would make it look cloudy. It does not do that on the MR10 and the flying debris and bugs have had not left any marks at all. After about 1,700 mile of back roads, it still looks perfect. I REALLY like it! I am sending you my info. Paul |
Had a customer ask me recently about bigger/properly sized wind wings. Any photos to share of those? Might like a set to try out here.
|
Hi Jay,
I checked my pictures and only have this partial one right now. It shows the lower half of the wind wing and how it is shaped to curve over my mirrors. I will take better pictures and post them tomorrow. Paul http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...m/DSC00454.jpg |
I took this picture to show the versatility of the MR10. I used a fine tooth saw and cut the 1/4 inch material about two inches wider at the bottom. I reversed the brackets to place the inner edge of the windwing much closer to the windshield frame. The width at the top is exactly the same as the old style windwings for two reasons. 1. The airflow around the top goes over your head. 2. People tend to lean forward when getting out of the car and sometimes hit their head on the windwing, if it's too wide.
For my car, I cut the lower edge to curve up over the mirrors. I have also made them with a straight bottom for cars that have the mirror placed elsewhere. The improvement in airflow around the cockpit is remarkable. It is so good, that I do not believe that I will have to use the side curtains anymore when the top is on! That is really slick. There's a market for this, but like my Caution stickers it costs more to chase that market than the payoff ;)
