Hello all...you guys realy helped out with my steering wheel question so now I got a harder one for you all.....I just picked up a 65 shelby borg warner t10 M1 aluminum case tranny. Need a cluster gear and input shaft for it...does anyone know where I can get these parts and does anyone know where I can get techinical data on this transmission such as teeth count for the counter shaft and main gears and input? This is some very valuable info that I need I hope someone out there can help me out...also need the shifter gate and shift rods for it....
Thanks in advance.. Jimmy |
Jimmy,
I am not sure what a T-10 M1 is, but Richmond gear now owns them. http://www.richmondgear.com/ Maybe they can help you. Also out of curiosity can you post a pic of that trans. Bud |
Jimmy, There were three different sets of ratios used on the Cobras. The majority had the "L" set. The "M" set you have is rarer and advantageous for racing. Also known as the Sebring set, the ratios are close and are 2.36:1, 1.62:1, 1.20:1, and 1:1. The percentage drop in engine revs between third and fourth with the "M" is only 17%, vs. 29% with the "L" set. These two gear sets used Ford input shafts with 11/16 by 10 spline.
The third gear set was a "K" set, sourced from GM! The M and K set gears are very, very rare and very expensive. Tex Racing Enterprises in Ether, NC may be able to help you. They bought a lot of Holman and Moody's stock many years ago, and may have something lying around that could help you. My experience with T-10's is that I would rather have a Toploader. In fact, I removed my T-10 from 2401 because it was always jumping out of 2nd and 3rd on deceleration. A rebuild lasted for omly a few months before I had the same problem. Cal Metal may have some words of wisdom for you. I know he is an expert on this topic. |
Jimmy, My Shelby parts book lists the following data regarding gear teeth:
1st-36 tooth 2nd-29 tooth 3rd-27 tooth reverse-39 tooth countershaft-T85B-3 (whatever that means!) Countershaft gear cluster 29-25-20-17T I don't know which gear set this is. However, the book only mentions the T10M. |
Hi Jim...thanks so much for your info it has helped....I wanted to know if possible if you still have your tranny could you send me a pic of the side cover as I am not sure I have an original side cover and would like to see a pic of yours as well as you front bearing retainer if it is original...

In addition to the gearsets popping out of the fine synchro teeth because they were not even a little undercut (and the alloy case moved around too much), the tailpieces had a habit of fatigueing, cracking and breaking under load, even including downshifts.
Few serious people ran them after the word got around, because who could afford to DNF? It is a collectors piece, to be sure, and would be nice on a milktoast 289 street car. Sell it to someone that isn't hot footed and get something much better (like a toploader in an alloy case) from Lee or even a new 600 5-speed from Tremmec. But, if you need the engineering experience... |
