Weber 48 IDA Base Gaskets
Anybody know a source for 0.03 inch thick base (carb to manifold) gaskets. All I have found so far are soft mushy ones much thicker than this.

The best and cheap gasket supplier is yourself!
I made my own gasket using a roll of gasket paper that I purchase from a large auto-part shop (you have to select your own paper thickness). How to made a gasket: Take a piece of gasket paper and lay it on the flange of the manifold. Then, gently tap around the inlet bore and outside of the flange with a small ball pein hammer to cut it. Obviously, you have to remove the carb studs (if any) before to do it. For the fixing holes, you can use a large 1/2" iron ball to punch it.;) |

I bought mine from Chuck Gutke at Cobra Restorers in Kennesaw, GA. I want to say they were about $6 each - I think I cleared him out but he has probably restocked since. Where in AL are you? |
Cobra Restorers has not been replying to e-mails lately. Telephone, by the time I get home in the afternoons they'll be closed.
About 35 miles southwest of Huntsville. I am thinking of getting the local industrial supply that makes gaskets to order to make me some from Klingersil™ C-4401 in 1/64th and 1/32nd thicknesses. I have done a CAD drawing. |
Dan Case Dan make sure the gasket material you are using is not affected by gas or oil. You will get a vacuum leak in a week. Use tracing paper and make your own template. Find a glass or socket the is OS 1-7/8 for a 48mm hole. Good luck Rick Lake

Klingersil™ C-4401 is recommended by the manufacturer for automotive use with fuels and lubricants. It is made in Austraila and it is not cheap. I have used this material in various thickness in my work at GE since 1988. So far I have not had a single minute of plant downtime due to a gasket problem with thousands installed. We use it with one material that attacks everything else tested (yes I lab test first). The only limitations I know of are "high temeratures" and most concentrated "strong" acids. In ANSI service application this material's blow out rating is very high. I have personally hydraulically tested 1" ring gaskets to 3,000 psig at 90°F. The original gaskets I believe SAI used, marked Miller in LA, seem to be cellulose fiber and tended to get "sucked into" the port to create massive air leaks.
Somewhere on CC there is an old thread by someone supplying this same material I think for Autolite™ In-line 4V carbs. |
